One of the hardest parts of parenting is knowing when to wait and when to ask for help. Many families hear advice like, “Let’s just wait and see.”

Sometimes, waiting is appropriate. Sometimes, children benefit from additional support. The challenge is that it is difficult to know if your child will catch up on their own.

✏️ Is there a “right” way to hold a crayon or pencil? The truth is, pencil grasp develops over time. As your child’s hand becomes stronger and more coordinated, they will move through different developmental grasp patterns before developing a more mature grasp.

Our OT team looks beyond how your child is holding their crayon or pencil. An OT will evaluate:
✔️ Hand strength
✔️ Coordination
✔️ Stability
✔️ Endurance

Your child’s grasp pattern should be comfortable, efficient, and support participation in everyday school tasks. If your child avoids coloring, tires easily, or complains of their hand hurting during coloring or writing, an occupational therapy evaluation can help identify any challenges and provide strategies to support success!

Public meltdowns can feel overwhelming for both you and your child. In those moments, it’s easy to feel judged or wonder if you’re doing enough. A meltdown isn’t a sign that you’re failing. It’s a sign that your child needs support with feelings that are bigger than they can manage on their own.

These 5 steps can help you respond with calm, connection, and confidence:
💫 Take a breath
💫 Keep everyone safe
💫 Ask yourself, “What is my child trying to tell me?”
💫 Connect once they’re calm
💫 Prepare for next time

Coloring is doing more than creating a picture. When your child colors, they’re strengthening foundational skills they use every day. From holding a pencil and using scissors to completing puzzles and preparing for handwriting, every page is an opportunity to learn through play.

Two incredible weeks.

This year’s summer camp was filled with laughter, creativity, movement, friendship, and opportunities for children to learn through play.

Every game, craft, and group activity was thoughtfully designed to support communication, motor skills, emotional regulation, problem solving, and social connection all while making learning fun!

A huge thank you to our amazing camp leaders and incredible families for making summer camp such a special experience. We loved watching your child grow, learn, and explore! We can’t wait for next year!
