We’ve all walked into classrooms with bright primary colors, fluorescent lighting, clutter covering every surface… and let’s not forget that classroom smell. 😅 You know the one.

Our brains are constantly deciding what deserves our attention. When the environment is filled with competing sights, sounds, and distractions, it takes more mental effort to filter out what doesn’t matter. For many children the cognitive load can make it harder to focus, regulate emotions, and learn.

I wanted The Art of Homeschool to feel different.

No backpacks piled on the tables and materials scattered everywhere. The table holds only what we’re using in that moment, so attention stays on the lesson rather than on everything else competing for it.

✈️ Final Update – We’re Submitting Our iFLY Headcount Tomorrow!

If you’ve been thinking about joining our homeschool iFLY field trip, this is your last opportunity before we finalize our group.

✨”Does she make you feel smart?”✨

This is a question I wish more parents ask their children about their teachers. If the answer is no, it might be time to reassess their learning environment. 🤔

When children feel smart in a classroom, it isn’t because the work is easy. It means the teacher is setting your child up for success. It means the lessons are designed around how their brain works. It means they are given the right tools, the right pace, and the freedom to try without the fear of failing.

When a child is set up for success, and the brains ability to learn is unlocked… the possibilities are endless!

At The Art of Homeschool, my goal is for every child in my classroom to feel seen and leave each day feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished.

And if they don’t? We change the setup until they do.

“Why isn’t my child listening?!”

This is a question I hear a lot from parents and it got me thinking…
I think one of the problems we often face is that we live in such a cognitively demanding world and we’re always multitasking. I think often, as moms, we blurt out things to our kids in the middle of a task and we feel like once it’s out in the universe, we’re free of it and we expect it to just be done. Except kids don’t work that way. They see we’re not actually paying attention so why bother. If we’re half way across the room, chances are we’re not following through. Before you know it, you realize they haven’t listened or done the last 5 things you’ve asked them to do and now it’s become a pattern. And this is only part of the problem but sometimes it helps a lot to ask them to do things only when you’re in close proximity and be prepared to follow through! And when they do, even if they need a lot of help, celebrate! Let that become the new pattern.
