"My mom had it. My aunt had it. Does that mean I'm next?" It's one of the most common and most emotional questions we get in October.
The honest answer: family history can raise your risk, but it doesn't decide your future. Most women with a relative who had breast cancer never develop it, and most women diagnosed have no family history at all.
What matters is the details: how close the relative is, how old they were when diagnosed, and whether other cancers like ovarian run in your family. In some families, risk comes from inherited gene changes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2.
That's where testing helps. We offer a simple blood test that looks at your DNA to check for hereditary risk. If your risk is higher, we can build a screening plan that fits you, which may mean starting earlier or adding imaging.
Ask our team about hereditary risk testing and whether it's right for you.
