Your first move is simple:
**Remove the driver from safety-sensitive duties immediately.**
That means the driver should not be dispatched to operate a commercial motor vehicle or perform DOT safety-sensitive work while prohibited.
After that, your company should document the situation, provide SAP referral information, review any required Clearinghouse reporting responsibilities, and keep the records organized in the driverโs compliance file.
This is not the time to guess, delay, or wait until the next day to figure out your process.
For small fleets, one missed step can create serious compliance problems.
Important reminder: providing referral information does not mean you are guaranteeing when the driver can return to work. The driver must complete the required Return-to-Duty process before returning to DOT safety-sensitive duties.
