With my toxicology and functional/integrative education, I've been aware of the impact of toxins in our environment and what they could be doing to our health. It's interesting to read that the EPA may be taking a softer stance on regulating known toxins that their scientists have found to be risky.

Well worth the quick read. It's never too late to start making a change.

FSM is a foundational treatment I use in my practice. Treating patients one frequency at a time…..

𝗔 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

▪️ Systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, is a debilitating condition where more than half of patients suffer from poor hand function due to scarring in their capillaries and connective tissues.

▪️ To compound this, almost all patients with systemic sclerosis also experience Raynaud’s syndrome.

▪️ Traditional treatment options to restore hand function for these patients have historically been severely limited.

🔬 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗙𝗦𝗠) 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀

▪️ However, recent research is shedding light on a fascinating and non-invasive potential treatment: Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM).

▪️ FSM uses physiologic subsensory electrical currents that have been shown to increase cellular energy (ATP).

▪️ In a unique historical twist, researchers utilized a list of frequencies derived from a 1922 medical device specifically believed to target scar tissue, which is the primary issue for scleroderma patients.

🧪 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀

▪️ Researchers conducted two pilot studies involving a total of 17 patients experiencing reduced hand function.

▪️ Using a two-channel microcurrent medical device, they applied specific frequencies using wet contacts over incredibly short sessions—between just 45 and 60 minutes.

▪️ Study 1 involved 6 patients treated for about an hour over two days to test various frequency combinations targeting scarring in the skin, connective tissues, and capillaries.

▪️ Study 2 refined this approach with 11 patients.

▪️ Based on the successes of the first study, researchers used a highly targeted 40-minute protocol.

▪️ They used specific frequencies for scarring (13 Hz), sclerosis (3 Hz), and vitality (49 Hz) paired with tissue-specific frequencies for the skin, connective tissue, and capillaries.

▪️ Simultaneously, they applied frequencies (40 Hz and 562 Hz) specifically aimed at alleviating Raynaud’s symptoms.

✨ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀

▪️ The outcomes of these brief treatments were exceptionally promising.

▪️ When the results of both pilot studies were combined, patients saw a highly significant average improvement of 40% in hand function, as measured by the Cochin hand function score.

▪️ Furthermore, patients in the second study experienced a significant average improvement of 18 points (out of 100) in the severity of their Raynaud’s symptoms.

📌 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲

▪️ Beyond the statistical data, the real-world impact on patients' daily lives was profound.

▪️ Tasks that were previously "nearly impossible" for some patients became actions they could perform "without difficulty."

▪️ Patients expressed amazement at their sudden ability to:

▪️ Easily pick up small coins from a tabletop.

▪️ Button shirts and turn round doorknobs due to increased sensitivity and dexterity.

▪️ Return to beloved hobbies: One patient regained the fine motor skills required to sew, while a musician recovered enough finger sensitivity to feel strings and vibrations to play the double bass again.

🩸 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸?

▪️ The researchers hypothesize that applying microcurrents to the capillaries may have significantly improved blood perfusion to the sensory nerves at the fingertips, facilitating these dramatic recoveries in dexterity and feeling.

⚠️ 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱

▪️ While FSM stands out as an easy-to-deliver, non-invasive treatment with absolutely no reported side effects, it is important to view these initial findings through a rigorous scientific lens.

▪️ The researchers noted that the treatment was ineffective for two patients with the most severe disease progression, suggesting that if joint damage in the fingers is too extensive, microcurrents may not be able to reverse the handicap.

▪️ Additionally, because these were small pilot studies without a control group or blinding, the researchers acknowledge that placebo effects or expectation bias cannot be entirely ruled out.

▪️ Despite these limitations, the large magnitude and persistence of the improvements heavily suggest a genuine therapeutic benefit.

▪️ Moving forward, larger randomized controlled trials using sham microcurrents and objective measurements—like grip strength and capillaroscopy—are needed to definitively confirm these remarkable early results.

🩺 Physical Therapy E-Learning Comment

These findings open an exciting discussion about the future role of bioelectrical therapies in complex rheumatologic rehabilitation. While the evidence is still preliminary, the rapid improvements in hand dexterity, sensory function, and daily activities reported in these pilot studies highlight the potential value of Frequency-Specific Microcurrent as a complementary rehabilitation approach for selected patients with systemic sclerosis and Raynaud’s syndrome.

📚 Clinical Implications in Rehabilitation

▪️ May provide a non-invasive adjunctive option for improving hand function in systemic sclerosis.

▪️ Potentially beneficial for fine motor recovery and functional task performance.

▪️ Could support participation in meaningful daily activities and hobbies that require dexterity.

▪️ Highlights the importance of targeting both vascular and connective tissue components during rehabilitation.

▪️ Suggests possible sensory and perfusion-related mechanisms influencing motor recovery.

▪️ May be more effective in earlier or less advanced stages before severe joint damage occurs.

▪️ Reinforces the need for multidisciplinary management combining medical care and rehabilitation strategies.

▪️ Larger randomized controlled trials are still needed before widespread clinical adoption.
