Your grandfather's trucking job really did pay better. Here's the part that's provable and the part that isn't:
You've probably seen the claim that drivers made $110,000 in today's money in 1980.
I went looking for where it comes from. The estimates don't agree. Depending on who counted, that same year lands anywhere from about $55,000 to $146,000. Nearly three times apart. That's not a fact, so it isn't in the book.
Here's what is.
BLS published this in their own journal: real hourly pay for for-hire truck drivers fell 40% between 1978 and 1996. Over the same stretch, the average American worker lost about a third as much.
Fair question, that ended thirty years ago. So what?
This. Since 2010, real driver pay is up 1.1%. Fourteen years. Pay rose on paper and inflation took nearly all of it. The boom in '21 and '22 was real, and then it got handed back.
The floor dropped once and it never came back up.
You didn't fall behind by slacking. You've been standing on ground that moved before most of us got here, and hasn't moved back since.
