Rae of Light Counseling Counseling for children, teens & adults—helping you find the light within. Hi, I’m Jennifer!

As a counselor, I believe that healing happens within a safe, supportive relationship. My approach is rooted in compassion, curiosity, and helping clients feel truly seen and heard. I work with children, teens, and adults, supporting them through life’s challenges, transitions, and moments of self-discovery. Whether it’s navigating big emotions, finding your identity, or working through past pain,

I’m here to walk alongside you. My goal is to create a space where you feel understood, empowered, and able to grow into the version of yourself you want to be. If you’re considering counseling, know that you don’t have to take this journey alone—healing starts with connection.

Before we ask kids to face hard things, we help them feel safe first.

In EMDR therapy, creating a “Safe Space” gives children a place they can return to — whether it’s real or imagined — where their body can settle and feel calm.

This isn’t just pretend.
With gentle bilateral stimulation, we help strengthen that feeling of safety so it becomes something their body recognizes and can come back to when needed.

Over time, kids begin to learn:
“I can feel safe inside myself.”

And that changes everything.

Big feelings can be overwhelming for children — and sometimes they don’t have the words or skills yet to handle everything they’re feeling.

In EMDR therapy, one tool we use is called “The Container.”

It helps children learn that they don’t have to hold every big feeling all at once. They can safely “put it away” and come back to it when they feel ready and supported.

This isn’t about avoiding feelings.
It’s about helping kids learn regulation, safety, and control — which comes first before any processing can happen.

When children learn they can handle big feelings in safe ways, they begin to feel more confident, calm, and in control.

This ball is more than just a toy.

In EMDR therapy, we often use a ball to create something called Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). This might look like gently tossing a ball back and forth, tapping, or other simple movements that go left and right.

That left–right movement helps both sides of the brain communicate while a child is thinking about a feeling, memory, or worry — in a safe and supported way.

To a child, it just feels like playing catch.
But while we play, the brain is processing, organizing, and healing.

Sometimes therapy for kids doesn’t look like talking.
Sometimes it looks like play.

EMDR therapy isn’t just for adults.
It can be a gentle, effective therapy for children too.

When children go through something overwhelming, they don’t always have the words to talk about it — but that doesn’t mean their brain and body aren’t holding onto the experience.

With children, EMDR often looks like play, drawing, storytelling, and movement. I focus on helping children feel safe, regulated, and supported while their brain processes what felt too big at the time.

Healing for kids doesn’t always mean retelling every detail.
Sometimes it simply means helping their brain finish what it couldn’t process before.

Most behavior makes sense when you understand what’s underneath it.

Big emotions.
Shutdown.
Overwhelm.
Avoidance.
People-pleasing.
Anger.

These aren’t flaws. They’re responses.

At Rae of Light Counseling in Oldsmar, I help children, teens, and adults explore what’s underneath their emotions and patterns — with compassion and curiosity.

Because behavior is communication.
Emotions carry information.
And patterns are learned, not character defects.

When we slow down long enough to understand the story beneath the reaction, shame begins to loosen its grip.

You’re not broken. There’s always something underneath.

Big feelings in kids aren’t a sign of “bad behavior.” They’re signals that your child’s brain is still learning how to regulate emotions. With patience, connection, and support, children can grow the skills they need to manage their feelings in healthy ways.

If you’re looking for support in helping your child navigate big emotions, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

Play therapy may look like “just playing,” but every toy has a purpose. Children use toys the way adults use words—to express feelings, explore experiences, and make sense of their world.

In this safe space, play becomes their voice, helping them build coping skills, confidence, and connection. 🔆
