Nobody talks about this one: is your home wheelchair accessible? Is the bathroom?

I am not trying to frighten anyone. But the workbook addresses something most families don't think about until they urgently need to: the cost of modifying your living space during a cancer journey can be significant, and it can come up fast.

Here is a practical tip from my workbook: sit down today and write out every credit account you have — the balance and the available limit. You don't have to use them. But knowing at a glance which account has the capacity to handle a sudden expense means you are not scrambling to figure it out in the middle of a crisis.

Preparation is not pessimism. It is how you protect the people you love.

The diagnosis is cancer. Now what?

There are two conversations most families avoid having, even when they should be having them. DNR. DNI.

Do Not Resuscitate. Do Not Intubate.

These are not the same as a Living Will, and my workbook is very clear on this: a DNR or DNI directive is completed IN ADDITION to a Living Will, not instead of it. Both documents serve different purposes, and having only one can leave critical decisions unaddressed.

I know this is hard. I lived through navigating these conversations with my husband. But having them early, when there is time and calm, is so much more humane than having them in a crisis.

Whether you're a spouse, a parent, or any caregiver — this is guidance I would want someone to give me.

Here's a term that will become very familiar very fast: prior authorization.

Before insurance pays for most cancer treatments, they require prior authorization. That means your doctor has to get approval before the treatment happens. And sometimes, they say no.

You can appeal. It feels overwhelming, but it is possible and it is worth doing. Many cancer treatment centers have professionals that automatically do this for all patients, but not all.

Whether you're a spouse, a parent, or any caregiver navigating this — here is a tip straight from my workbook: introduce yourself to the hospital finance office on day one. They have seen this before, they know your insurance, and they can be your best ally when you need to fight a denial.
