Since “toxic chemical” has become a major talking point in the wellness industry, it is important to understand something: a chemical name is not a risk assessment.
A substance is not automatically dangerous because it is synthetic, unfamiliar, or capable of causing harm under certain conditions. The relevant question is exposure—how much, how often, for how long, by what route, in what chemical form, and for whom. A potential hazard does not automatically translate into meaningful risk at a particular real-world exposure.
Your body produces formaldehyde every single day as part of normal metabolism. You consume fluoride when you eat certain foods, including seafood, or drink tea. Trace amounts of metals are present throughout our environment. If you consume excessive amounts of cassia cinnamon, its coumarin content can pose a liver-toxicity concern—particularly for susceptible people. Alcohol can also damage the liver; that applies to the ethanol in beer, wine, and spirits, and the risk depends strongly on the amount and pattern of drinking.
If you eat eggs, you are consuming phenylalanine. If you drink a diet soda containing aspartame, your body breaks it down into, among other things, phenylalanine—an essential amino acid and building block for protein. That does not make eggs or diet soda associated with meaningful toxicity at ordinary levels of consumption for the general population. The important exception is phenylketonuria, or PKU: people with this inherited metabolic disorder need to limit phenylalanine, including phenylalanine derived from aspartame.
This is the problem with simply listing chemicals. Almost anything can sound frightening when you strip away the dose and the context. Formaldehyde can be toxic. So can alcohol. So can water. So can cinnamon. The existence of a potential hazard does not tell you whether a particular exposure is actually harmful.
You cannot determine risk simply by looking at a list of chemical names. You have to look at the exposure.
