A Quick Health Update for Our Families âď¸đżđ
Summer is in full swing, and weâve definitely seen a shift in the reasons families are visiting the office. Over the past week, these have been some of the most common concerns weâve been evaluating:
POISON IVY
Common symptoms:
⢠Itchy red rash
⢠Small bumps or blisters
⢠Linear streaks where the plant brushed the skin
⢠Swelling in affected areas
Good to know:
⢠Poison ivy is caused by contact with the plantâs oil (urushiol), not by the fluid in the blisters
⢠Washing the skin soon after exposure may help reduce the severity of the rash
⢠Most cases improve with supportive care, but some children may require prescription medication if the rash is severe or widespread
đ Call the office if the rash involves the face or eyes, is widespread, becomes infected, or your child is very uncomfortable.
SWIMMERâS EAR
Common symptoms:
⢠Ear pain, especially when the outer ear is touched or moved
⢠Itching in the ear canal
⢠Ear drainage
⢠Feeling of fullness in the ear
⢠Decreased hearing
Good to know:
⢠Swimmerâs ear is an infection of the outer ear canal that commonly develops after frequent swimming or moisture trapped in the ear
⢠Keeping ears as dry as possible after swimming may help reduce the risk
⢠Treatment usually involves prescription antibiotic ear drops
đ Call the office if your child has ear pain, drainage, fever, swelling around the ear, or worsening symptoms.
SUNBURNS
Common symptoms:
⢠Red, painful skin
⢠Warmth to the touch
⢠Swelling
⢠Blistering in more severe cases
⢠Tenderness or peeling after several days
Good to know:
⢠Even one significant sunburn can damage the skin
⢠Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), protective clothing, hats, and seeking shade are the best ways to prevent sunburn
⢠Encourage plenty of fluids if your child has been out in the heat
đ Call the office if your child develops large blisters, severe pain, fever, dehydration, dizziness, or if the sunburn is extensive.
