May 20, 2007. Fall Out Boy released the fourth single from their blockbuster album Infinity on High and the pop‑punk landscape got a little more ambitious.
“The Take Over, The Breaks Over” is a masterclass in musical bravado. The guitar riff is pure David Bowie worship (specifically “Rebel Rebel”), while the title itself is a direct reference to Jay‑Z’s 2001 diss track “Takeover.” Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz weren’t afraid to reach outside the genre for inspiration – and it paid off. 💀
