Doheny Eye Institute Doheny is a non-profit and top-ranked research, education organization in the field of opthalmology. Mrs. Doheny created the organization named for her.

The Doheny Eye Institute works in a range of innovative ways to improve vision in Los Angeles and around the world. Carrie Estelle Doheny, wife of the prominent Los Angeles oilman Edward L. Doheny, lost the sight in her left eye at the age of 69. Suddenly aware of the precious and delicate nature of the gift of sight, in 1947 Mrs. Today, the Doheny Eye Institute serves thousands of patients in clinics around Los Angeles and Orange Counties and has emerged as a world leader in basic and clinical vision research and advanced patient care. The Institute's innovative research programs continually result in new diagnostic and treatment procedures and are respected internationally for research of the highest caliber, with direct impact on changing lives with improved sight.

Our 8th Annual Doheny-UCLA Glaucoma Symposium brought together ophthalmologists, researchers, and industry partners to exchange insights, explore advances in glaucoma care, and share a common commitment to preserving sight.

Dr. Alfredo Sadun shared highlights from Doheny’s remarkable history, and Dr. Deborah Ferrington led members through our laboratories, offering an inside look at the innovative vision research currently underway. Following the tour, members gathered for lunch and an opportunity to connect.

What’s next in glaucoma care, and how is it changing what happens in the clinic and the OR?

Join us for the 8th Annual Doheny–UCLA Glaucoma Symposium on Saturday, September 26, for a highly interactive morning focused on the evolving landscape of glaucoma diagnosis, treatment and surgery.

We’re pleased to welcome Darrell WuDunn, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville, as this year’s Donald Minckler Doheny Glaucoma Lecturer.

Led by course directors Vikas Chopra, MD, and Brian Francis, MD, MS, the program brings together glaucoma experts for focused presentations and discussion on some of the issues shaping practice today, including home IOP monitoring, combination MIGS, minimally invasive bleb surgery, sustained-release drug delivery, microstents, complex anterior segment surgery and management of glaucoma surgical complications.

And the learning doesn’t stop with the lectures. The morning concludes with more than two hours of interactive surgical and technology wet labs covering MIGS, drug delivery, diagnostics and advanced glaucoma procedures, giving attendees an opportunity to take what they’ve learned and put it into practice.

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, an important reminder that protecting vision begins early.

Good vision plays an essential role in how children learn, explore and experience the world around them. Regular eye care and early detection of vision problems can help identify concerns that children may not recognize or be able to describe themselves.

At Doheny Eye Institute, our commitment to advancing vision science is driven by a simple goal: creating a future where people of every age can see more clearly and live more fully.

This month, we join the ophthalmic community in encouraging families to make eye health part of their back-to-school routine.
