September is National Preparedness Month, and is a time to reflect on the September 11, 2001 attack on our nation. It is also a time to raise our awareness about potential disasters in our area and our level of preparedness for them. As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attack, Americans are urged to take steps toward being prepared.
This year’s theme for National Preparedness Month is, “Americans Stand Ready.” The theme reflects the spirit of unity, resilience and resourcefulness that make our country strong. It’s a reminder that each of us can make a difference by taking proactive steps before a disaster strikes, and encouraging loved ones to do the same. Americans can contribute to the safety and security of the entire nation.

Evacuation warnings are still in effect for northern San Luis Obispo County due to the Plaskett Fire. Evacuation Warnings were issued on Sunday for Zones SLC-001, SLC-002, and SLC-003 which lie in an area south of the Monterey County line, north of Carpoforo Creek and Via Piedras Blancas, east of the Pacific Ocean, and west of Green Canyon. An Evacuation Warning is issued when there is a potential threat to life and property from an approaching emergency or disaster. You do not have to wait until an Evacuation Order is issued to leave. If you feel threatened by wildfire, leave. If smoke is aggravating your health condition, leave. If you have livestock to move, substantial property to pack, or will otherwise need extended time to evacuate, leave early. Be sure you have registered at AlertSLO.org so you will receive alerts, notifications, and updates in a timely manner. An evacuation shelter has been opened in Cambria at the Veterans' Hall, 1000 Main Street.

Wildfire preparedness is an ongoing process. Take time throughout the year to review your emergency supplies, reduce wildfire risks around your property, and stay informed about conditions in your area.

-Clear leaves, vegetation, and other combustible materials around your home
-Review your wildfire preparedness plan annually
