Heading to the pool with your baby this summer?
If your little one gets hungry, thirsty, overwhelmed, excited, tired, or simply wants to reconnect, breastfeeding at the pool is completely normal.
Many parents are surprised to learn that there is no need to limit breastfeeding around pools. Human milk contains living substances that help protect babies from viruses and bacteria they may encounter in everyday life, including through pool water.
For babies, breastfeeding is about so much more than food. It provides comfort, reassurance, hydration, connection, and a familiar place to return to during a busy day of new sights, sounds, and splashing.
At La Leche League Canada, we believe families should feel welcomed and supported wherever they choose to feed their babies. That's why we've created a Breastfeeding and Pools Guide for aquatic staff and facility team members. The guide helps foster welcoming spaces where breastfeeding families can enjoy community pools and aquatic centres without worry.
