🧂 **Can we PLEASE stop blaming the damn salt shaker for everything?**
Every few months another video pops up proclaiming...
🚨 **"Salt causes heart attacks!"** 🚨
Cue the dramatic music.
As a Family Nurse Practitioner, my first question is always:
**"Cool...which patients are we talking about?"**
Because details matter.
Let's talk about the study everyone loves to quote...
Nearly **21,000 people.**
Sounds impressive, right?
Now let's look at WHO those people actually were...
👉 Average age? **65 years old.**
👉 **88% already had high blood pressure.**
👉 **73% had ALREADY had a stroke.**
👉 They all lived in **rural China.**
Read that again.
This wasn't a study of healthy 35-year-olds.
It wasn't your CrossFit buddy.
It wasn't your construction worker sweating buckets in West Texas.
It wasn't Karen who thinks Himalayan salt is a personality trait.
It was a **VERY high-risk population** that had already earned themselves a VIP card to the cardiology office.
Now here's the part almost nobody tells you...
They DIDN'T compare:
❌ Salt
vs.
❌ No salt.
They compared:
✔️ Regular salt
to
✔️ A salt substitute that contained **LESS sodium AND MORE potassium.**
See the difference?
That's like saying...
"I lost weight after I started exercising and stopped eating donuts."
Cool.
Which one helped more?
The answer is...
**We don't know from this study alone.**
Now before someone starts typing...
*"So you're saying blood pressure doesn't matter?"*
Absolutely not.
High blood pressure absolutely increases cardiovascular risk.
If you have hypertension, heart failure, kidney disease, or you're salt-sensitive, sodium may be an important part of YOUR treatment plan.
But here's where I draw the line...
Don't take a study of **65-year-old hypertensive stroke survivors** and use it to scare every healthy human into thinking a sprinkle of salt on their eggs is a cardiac emergency.
That's not evidence-based medicine.
That's clickbait wearing a white coat.
Here's my philosophy...
🌿 Stop treating nutrients like villains.
🌿 Start treating patients like individuals.
Because medicine should never sound like:
**"Everyone should..."**
It should sound like:
**"Let's figure out what's right for YOU."**
Now...I'll step off my hippie soapbox.
Pass the sea salt. 😉
