đź‘€ Column Jump Eye Jumps with UNO Cards

One of my favorite ways to work on saccades (eye jumps) is with simple UNO cards! I love setting it up this way because the cards can be shuffled, so kiddos can’t accidentally memorize the pattern like they sometimes can with worksheets.

The goal is for the eyes to do all the work while the head stays still. The child starts by naming the numbers (or colors if they aren’t efficient in number naming yet) in the first and last columns, jumping their eyes back and forth across the table. Once they reach the bottom, they move to the second and second-to-last columns, then continue working inward until they reach the center two columns. Then we reverse the pattern and work our way back out!

This activity challenges:
âś… Saccadic eye movements (quick, accurate eye jumps)
âś… Visual attention and scanning
âś… Eye-head dissociation (keeping the head still while the eyes move)
âś… Visual endurance and efficiency

All of which are super important for reading and writing!

Bonus: It’s easy to grade up or down by changing the number of cards, spacing, speed, or adding a metronome for an extra challenge!

For littles, you can also add a hand eye coordination piece by having them tap each number as they go!… but remember to keep their head still!

ITS BACK!! I don’t when it came back, but our favorite website, https://eyecanlearn.com/ is up and running again!

The purpose of this website is to provide parents with fun eye exercises to enhance their children’s visual processing skills for better school performance and improved attention. If you know a child who struggles, the underlying cause may be vision–even if the child has 20/20 eyesight. Children...

As we are seeing these difficulties, start with an eye exam. We need more studies

This recent study found that visual hypersensitivity or over responsivity, encompassing discomfort to brightness, patterns, flicker, and complex environments, is elevated across a wide range of neurodivergent, neurological, and mental health conditions.

In a large-scale self-report study (N=2,582), all 11 groups demonstrated increased sensitivity across four identified subtypes. While these factors were broadly transdiagnostic, their relative profiles revealed both shared and condition-specific patterns. Sensitivity to intense visual environments was particularly pronounced across autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia, with similar trends observed in fibromyalgia and PPPD. In contrast, migraine and synaesthesia showed distinct response patterns.

Regression analyses controlling for comorbidity confirmed significant unique contributions from most conditions, with autism, fibromyalgia, migraine, and persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) emerging as the strongest predictors.

Overall, findings support a transdiagnostic model of visual hypersensitivity, suggesting shared underlying vulnerabilities in perceptual processing that extend across traditional diagnostic boundaries.
