Pride Month was created by LGBTQ+ activists to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and celebrate LGBTQ+ identity, culture, and rights.
Historical Background
Pride Month traces its roots to the Stonewall Riots, which occurred on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Police raids on the bar, a popular gathering place for LGBTQ+ individuals, sparked spontaneous resistance from patrons, including transgender women and people of color, leading to several days of protests and clashes. These events are widely recognized as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and the push for liberation and equality
First Pride Marches
To commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, activists organized the Christopher Street Liberation Day March on June 28, 1970, in New York City. Simultaneous marches were held in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. Key organizers included Brenda Howard, often called the “Mother of Pride,” and Craig Rodwell, who helped promote the idea of an annual demonstration. The marches were intended both as a protest against oppression and a celebration of LGBTQ+ identity
The term “Pride” was popularized by early activists to counter societal shame and stigma. Activists like L. Craig Schoonmaker advocated for the term as a way for individuals to embrace self-worth and visibility. Other figures, including Brenda Howard and Robert A. Martin, helped solidify the use of “Pride” to describe these celebrations
Official Recognition
Pride Month gradually gained official recognition in the United States. In 1999, President Bill Clinton declared June as Gay and Le***an Pride Month. President Barack Obama later expanded it to include the entire LGBTQ+ community, and President Joe Biden continued this recognition, emphasizing advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.
