Reinforcement increases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again while teaching a new skill.

Punishment decreases the chances of a behavior occurring again, but does not teach the child what to do instead.

Three different ways to ask the same question. Make sure you’re mixing up the way you ask your toddlers questions so they can generalize!!

If you’re going to cave in it’s best to do it sooner rather than waiting 10 minutes into a tantrum.

One of many ways to deny access to your child without saying the word “no”.

1. Gave 2 alternative choices.
2. He didn’t accept either, so I transitioned myself to grab the play-doh. This removes the attention aspect.
3. Once he visually saw the play-doh he wanted to play with it.

2 key points here. I did not go back and forth with him when he was refusing to accept an alternative and I did not give him what he originally asked for.

Yes, it can be this simple. First then statements give your child a clear expectation of what needs to be done before they can get what they want.

First then statements should be apart of your everyday language to your children. They set clear expectations of what needs to be done in order to get what they want. They may not catch onto it at first, but if you continue to use it and ONLY follow through once they do the first task its a game changer.

You typically use these when a non-preferred task needs to be done before a reinforcing task. A couple examples include:

"first clean up, then you can have play-doh"
"First go potty, then outside"
"put your shoes away first, then you can have TV"

Working in in home and the clinic setting, here are some key differences. Some of these may vary on the company you choose to go with, but this is what I have experienced working in both settings.

If you want to get rid of or decrease a behavior you need to find out WHY they are doing it. Then you can start to teach the replacement skill.

Your daily habits will inherently start to become your child's habits. Make them good ones.
