It’s a fact: People who participate in a stroke rehabilitation program have better outcomes than those who do not.

During Stroke Awareness Month, it's important to know the impact of your stroke is different than anyone else’s. As a result, a personalized program — like the ones we provide at GSPP Rehabilitation — can help restore movement, strength and speech and help you or your loved one with daily tasks.

Emily Fleming ran a pain-free PR at the Broad Street Run, coming back from a knee injury stronger and healthier. GSPP's Running Program, in partnership with Penn Medicine, helped Emily clock a 1:28.

"Physical therapist Rich DiGiacomo and the team at GSPP's University City location gave me the tools and knowledge to improve my running and prevent injury from happening again," Emily said. "I really appreciate all of the help!”

Congratulations, Emily!

It was an amazing night and weekend for GSPP Rehabilitation at the 130th Penn Relays.

Two teams of GSPP clinicians laced up the spikes to run in the Corporate DMR Relay on April 24. Both GSPP teams (Team A: Brian Zabilski, John Bellace, Ashley Underkofler & Joe Cardie; Team B: Erica Ferraiolo-Shearn, Emily VanderMeer, Rich DiGiacomo, Michael Marano) had fun and performed well against tough competition, including U.S. Olympic gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz. Thank you to all the runners, alternatives and the many GSPP colleagues, family and friends who came out to support the team's efforts in the Relays. GSPP ran the Relays this year in support of our community partner, Students Run Philly Style, by collecting shoe donations, which they accept at any local PHILADELPHIA RUNNER location.

Additionally, more than a dozen GSPP clinicians volunteered as medical staff throughout the weekend.

Inpatient Visitor Restrictions in Place
Patients at Good Shepherd Penn Partners Specialty Hospital (LTACH) and the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, a unit of the Hospital of the University of Penn (HUP) located at Rittenhouse, can have two healthy (i.e. no fever or other signs of illness) visitors (aged 12 or over) at a time. Patients may have up to two family caregivers present for family meetings and goals of care/end of life discussions.

At this time, patients with COVID-19 may not have in person visitors. Accommodations will be made for virtual visitation. Exceptions will be permitted for patients with special circumstances (such as long length of stay) and for patients at end-of life. Approved visitors will receive information about risk of infection and will be asked to put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gown, gloves, medical mask, and eye protection/face shield). Unit staff will show you how to put on/remove PPE to ensure your safety and reduce the risk of viral spread to others.

Visitation Hours:
Specialty Hospital (LTACH): Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine (PIRM): Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
