🍂 Your October health reminder: It’s time for your flu vaccine and COVID booster!

Respiratory viruses are circulating right now, and one of the simplest steps you can take to protect yourself is to stay up to date on your vaccinations.

I received my flu vaccine and COVID booster a few weeks ago so I would be protected while traveling and going into October. Now I’m reminding you to make your appointment, too!

As physicians, we know that prevention matters. Vaccination can reduce your risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications especially as we spend more time indoors and travel to family gatherings.

My October checklist:
✔️ Get your annual flu vaccine.
✔️ Stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine.
✔️ Practice good hand hygiene.
✔️ Where a mask when traveling.
✔️ Stay home when you’re sick and help protect others.

Have you gotten your flu vaccine and COVID booster yet? Share in the comments, and save this reminder for someone who needs it!

3 SKINCARE INGREDIENTS TAKING OVER YOUR FEED

Is the hype justified? Let’s separate skincare science from social media buzz. Here’s what this dermatologist has to say!

1) PDRN: Is the viral salmon-DNA serum worth the hype?

PDRN is a skincare ingredient popularized by Korean beauty trends and marketed for skin repair, hydration, and improved texture. But here’s the catch: much of the research involves injectable or procedure-assisted treatments, and the evidence for topical serums is still limited. Viral doesn’t automatically mean proven!

2) Retinal vs. Retinol: What’s the difference?

Both are vitamin A derivatives that can help improve skin texture, acne, and visible signs of aging. Retinal (retinaldehyde) requires one fewer conversion step in the skin than retinol to become retinoic acid. It may act more quickly, but formulation matters—and both can cause irritation. Start slowly, moisturize, and protect your skin with sunscreen. Avoid topical retinoids during pregnancy.

3) Azelaic Acid: The multitasking ingredient?

This one deserves attention! Azelaic acid can help with acne, redness associated with rosacea, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark marks that may linger after a breakout). It is particularly useful for patients with skin of color who are concerned about discoloration.

THIS DERMATOLOGIST’S TAKEAWAY:
The best skincare ingredient isn’t necessarily the one going viral. It’s the one backed by evidence, suited to your skin, and used consistently.

Today I get my yearly mammogram and this year the results can tell me about my heart in addition to signs of breast cancer!

Every October, during my birthday month, I schedule my annual mammogram. It’s one way I prioritize my health and invest in prevention.

Did you know a mammogram may show more than signs of breast cancer?

Breast arterial calcification (BAC) is calcium buildup in the walls of blood vessels in the breast. It can sometimes be seen on a routine mammogram.

BAC may be linked to a higher risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke. But, BAC is a marker of risk and not a diagnosis of heart disease.

If it appears on your report, talk with your physician about your overall heart health.

A normal mammogram does not eliminate the risk of heart disease, but every visit is an opportunity to support your health.

My October birthday tradition reminds me that celebrating another year also means investing in the years ahead. 🎂

Have you scheduled your mammogram? Consider this your friendly reminder!

🍂 Saturday in the Salon | My Fall Hair Repair Essential Ingredients

Cooler, drier fall weather can be tough on your hair especially hair that has been colored, chemically treated, heat-styled, braided or worn in extensions.

My one essential for fall hair repair?

A hair-repair protein pack left on for 20 minutes with or without heat.

When choosing one, look for these two hero ingredients:

* Hydrolyzed Keratin
Keratin is the primary structural protein in hair. Hydrolyzed keratin can help fill in gaps in the hair cuticle from damage and temporarily strengthen and smooth damaged areas of the hair shaft, improving the feel and manageability of fragile hair.

* Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
This smaller protein can help reinforce the hair fiber, improve strength, hydrates and reduce the appearance of damage and breakage.

My fall routine: Apply your protein treatment, leave it on for 20 minutes, and use gentle heat (under the dryer or steam heat) if the product recommends it. Then rinse and follow with your regular conditioner.

Remember: protein helps repair and strengthen; moisture helps soften and condition. Healthy hair needs both.

And if your hair is already brittle or breaking, this is the season to repair—not wait until the damage becomes more extensive.

Dermatologist-Approved Fall Skin Care Kit

Just like the trees and weather are changing, so is your skin.

Cooler temperatures, lower humidity and indoor heat can leave your skin feeling dry, tight, rough and less comfortable.

The good news? A few simple changes to your routine can help keep your skin healthy, smooth, hydrated and glowing all during the fall.

Here are my four fall essentials (no endorsements just information):

1. Cleanser
Choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser that removes makeup, sunscreen and impurities without stripping your skin.

2. Moisturizer
Fall is the time to consider a richer moisturizer. Look for ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid, or even urea to help support your skin barrier and lock in moisture.

3. Sunscreen
Don’t put your sunscreen away just because summer is over! Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ remains a daily essential, even on cool or cloudy days. Just select a richer and moisturizing formulation.

4. Serum
This is where you can customize your routine. Depending on your skin’s needs, consider ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid or a retinoid introduced thoughtfully to avoid irritation.

My fall skincare philosophy is simple:

Change with the season, but don’t complicate your routine.

Healthy skin should feel comfortable, hydrated and smooth not tight.

Follow for more skincare tips.

12 months. 12 places. 1 year before a milestone birthday and the countdown begins.

For the next 12 months, I’m celebrating the lead up to a very special birthday by giving myself something I value deeply: the gift of wonder.

This series is my reminder to savor life, seek beauty, embrace adventure, and never take the everyday magic around us for granted.

Month One: Budapest, Hungary. 🇭🇺

The Traveling Dermatologist traveled to this beautiful city to experience its architecture, history, culture, food, and breathtaking views and proof that there is extraordinary beauty all around us when we slow down enough to notice it.

Each month, I’ll travel somewhere new. Sometimes it will be far, distant, and wonderfully exotic. Other times, it may be surprisingly close to home.

The destination is only part of the journey.

They’re about celebrating the life we’ve been fortunate enough to live and the life still waiting to be discovered.

Because birthdays aren’t just about counting the years.

Here’s to Month One. And to 11 more months of wonder.

The Traveling Dermatologist has landed in Vienna! 🇦🇹

I traveled to Vienna, Austria, to educate and exchange knowledge with dermatology colleagues from around the globe. I am deeply honored to have been selected as a speaker for the session “Hot Topics in Dermatology Selected by the EADV President.”

Many thanks to Professor Branka Marinović for the invitation and for recognizing the growing importance of Skin of Color Dermatology.

My presentation focused on a topic that is emerging globally including throughout Europe as an area of both interest and real clinical need.

We discussed:
* Normal variants in skin of color including something as simple as the dark line that may run down your arm called Furchers Lines.
* How common skin diseases can look different in people with darker skin tones
* Why these differences can sometimes lead to delayed or incorrect diagnoses
* The importance of understanding the full spectrum of human skin tones in dermatologic education and clinical care.

Here’s my message to patients: If you have a skin condition and your physician cannot determine the cause, don’t be afraid to seek another opinion and ideally from a dermatologist who has expertise in Skin of Color Dermatology.

SATURDAYS IN THE SALON | Vienna Edition 🇦🇹

This week, the salon is at the Austria Center Vienna, where I’m attending the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerelogy Congress and one message about hair loss is has recurred in many sessions:

Hair loss prevention trumps generating regrowth.

When it comes to hair loss, it is often easier to preserve the hair you have than to regrow hair that has already been lost.

That’s why early evaluation matters.

If you are noticing increased shedding, thinning, a widening part, a receding hairline, or changes in your scalp, don’t wait and see. See a dermatologist.

The earlier we identify the cause, the sooner we can discuss appropriate treatment and, when possible, protect your existing hair.

Protect what you have. Act early.

Prevention trumps Regrowth.
