This past weekend marked the inaugural AOFAS Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) course, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished together

🔥The Best Way to Approach the Personal Statement 🔥

🙄For some people writing and personal statements come super naturally. For others, it can be a very daunting task. In today’s post we’ll highlight some tricks for how to approach your personal statement. Remember, these statements do get read/reviewed by the admissions/selection committees, so take them seriously !

1. Start with an anecdote, personal or professional that speaks to your interest in orthopaedic surgery....(Beware though, a zillion people all start their statements with discussions of their own ortho injuries). You want to engage the reader right off the bat and separate yourself from the rest of the pack!
2. Briefly review how you got into medicine in the first place; this doesn’t need to be extremely elaborate, but should provide the reader with some additional context of what has driven you into the the field
3. Why orthopedics ? We know from the second paragraph, why you went into medicine, but what specific experiences drove you into orthopaedics? Again, remember think critically about this piece; lots of people will cite personal injuries, or the first surgery they saw...but what is more novel about your particular story?
4. How have you fortified your interest in orthopaedics? Was it through various research projects, medical missions, or otherwise? This is a chance to highlight important facets of your application that you want to review in more detail than ERAS allows
5. Why you? What separates you from the rest of the pack? This is where you need to sell yourself ; this doesn’t mean you should come off arrogant. You need to be confident in your abilities and discuss why your skill set makes you best suited for a given residency position!

🔥If you follow these 5 steps you will have a great framework for your personal statement. You don’t need to be the most prolific writer and being super poetic isn’t necessary. Start the statement early and keep fine tuning it with the help of friends, faculty advisors/mentors. Do not put this off! Make sure to put your best foot forward. 🔥

😳Starting PGY-1 can feel like trying to drink from a firehose 💧➡️🚒😳

On the newest Blog post from “sounds from the training room”, you get to learn about things that Dr. Kim (.joanna.kim ) wishes she knew before the start of PGY1 year. You’ll learn medicine and surgery, but some of the biggest lessons have nothing to do with anatomy or operative technique:

✅ Build systems → efficiency matters; stay organized!
✅ Learn to prioritize → not everything is urgent
✅ Communicate early and often → with your team, nurses, patients, and families
✅ Find a study strategy (and material) that actually works for you
✅ Take notes on attending preferences—you’ll thank yourself later (more than you realize now!) ; also take notes from every case you are involved with

The truth? No one walks into intern year knowing everything. You’re supposed to feel uncomfortable. Growth happens there
To every incoming resident: you don’t need to be perfect on day one. Be curious. Be coachable. Be accountable. Be consistent
