Not every family challenge is a crisis—but it can still impact the workplace.

🌵 A child who is terrified of needles.
🌵 A daily battle over taking medication.
🌵 A routine blood draw that turns into an exhausting experience.

These moments are incredibly common.

🌵🌵 Research suggests up to two-thirds of children experience significant fear of needles, and approximately 50% of children with chronic conditions struggle with medication adherence.

For parents, that often means delayed appointments, missed work, increased stress, and hours spent managing situations that could be made easier with the right preparation and coping strategies.

Sometimes the most valuable employee benefit isn't another app, it's helping families successfully navigate everyday healthcare challenges before they become bigger problems.

This is why we created Saguaro Coping. Small moments of support can make a big difference for families...and for employers.

“Child life services are integral to quality pediatric care.” That’s exactly why child life matters. Caring for children means caring for their emotional needs, too. Child life helps make healthcare more understandable, more supportive, and more human for children and families.

When an employee experiences a loss, they don't leave their grief at home.

The death of a spouse, parent, child, family member—even a beloved pet—doesn't just affect one person. It affects the entire family, including the children who often don't understand what's happening.

🌵 🌵 Approximately 1 in 5 employees experiences a significant bereavement each year, and grief-related productivity losses are estimated to cost U.S. employers more than $100 billion annually.

Most organizations offer a few days of bereavement leave. But what happens when an employee returns to work and is still trying to answer questions like:

🌵 "Where did Grandma go?"

🌵 "Is Mommy going to die too?"

🌵 "Will our dog come back?"

Helping parents have these conversations with confidence doesn't just support children, it helps employees return to work with less stress, greater focus, and the reassurance that their family is coping together.

That’s where Saguaro Coping steps in. Supporting families is more than a compassionate benefit. It's an investment in your workforce.

July is Bereaved Parents Awareness Month, a time to hold close the parents grieving the loss of a child and to recognize the support families may need along the way. While the family is grieving, siblings often have questions, and sometimes adults do not know what to say. That is where child life can help.

Child life specialists support families by offering age-appropriate explanations, helping siblings understand what has happened, and giving parents guidance for hard conversations. They can also help children express feelings through play, prepare for memorials or family changes, and find ways to stay connected to their sibling’s memory.

When friends and neighbors may not know how to help, child life can step in with compassionate support, clear language, and tools that help families move through grief together. No family should have to navigate bereavement alone.

We can’t sustain emotionally safe pediatric care if the workforce delivering it is emotionally depleted.

Emotional safety is described as an intentional, interdisciplinary practice—meaning it can’t rest on one person or one role. When systems don’t adequately support emotionally safe care, healthcare professionals can experience moral distress, burnout, and a sense that they are failing the families they want to help.

The Staff Communication, Education & Training pillar focuses on equipping the entire team to:

🌵 Use developmentally appropriate, trauma‑informed communication

🌵 Share a common language around emotional safety

🌵 Know when and how to collaborate with child life and other support services

Investing in emotional safety is one way to care for patients, families, and staff at the same time.

If you’re in leadership or HR, what education or tools would most help your teams feel equipped to support children’s emotional safety?

This Father’s Day, we’re honoring the dads and father figures who help kids carry big feelings through medical journeys.

Fathers and father figures often play a powerful role in children’s emotional safety during medical experiences. A calm hand to hold, a silly joke to break the tension, or a steady voice explaining, “I’ll be right here the whole time,” can make an unfamiliar situation feel safer.

When healthcare teams partner with fathers and other caregivers through clear communication, education, and coaching, we help them:

🌵Understand what their child will experience

🌵Learn simple coping strategies to use at the bedside

🌵Feel more confident responding to big feelings and hard questions

Emotionally safe care includes caring for caregivers—so they, in turn, can better support their children.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, uncles, step‑dads, and father figures walking beside kids through appointments, procedures, and long hospital days. Your presence matters more than you may ever know.

At Saguaro Coping, we believe emotional safety is not an accident—it’s something we assess, support, and intentionally create.

Tag a dad or father figure who helped a child feel braver during a medical experience—or share one thing a caregiver did that made a hard day a little easier.

Visiting a sibling in the NICU, a grandparent after surgery, or a parent in the ICU can be confusing and frightening for children. The sights, sounds, and smells of these environments are often unlike anything they’ve experienced before.

Child life specialists support emotional safety by:
🌵 Providing developmentally appropriate explanations of what children will see
🌵 Preparing kids for equipment, sounds, and staff roles
🌵 Offering coping plans (jobs for hands, comfort items, choices about how close to stand)
🌵 Checking in afterward so kids can share what they noticed and how they feel

With the right preparation and support, the same environment that once felt overwhelming can become a place where children feel informed, included, and safer.

At Saguaro Coping, we believe emotional safety is not an accident—it’s something we assess, support, and intentionally create.

Have you ever seen a child’s experience in a hospital change just because someone took time to explain what they’d see? Tell us about it (without sharing identifying details).

Even when no one is speaking, the healthcare environment is telling children a story.

From the moment a a child walks into a clinic, hospital, or surgery center, their senses are gathering information. Bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, crowded hallways, and rushed conversations can all send the message: “This place is scary and out of control.”

The Environment pillar of emotional safety asks us to intentionally shape spaces and routines so they communicate:
🌵 “You are welcome here.”
🌵 “You will know what to expect.”
🌵 “You have choices and support.”

Simple changes—child‑friendly visuals, quiet corners, clear signage, visual schedules, and spaces for play—can dramatically lower anxiety for kids and caregivers.

At Saguaro Coping, we believe emotional safety is not an accident—it’s something we assess, support, and intentionally create.

🌵 🌵 🌵 If you could change one thing in your environment tomorrow to support emotional safety, what would it be?
