Disease prevention begins with a happy, balanced “gut”, from top to bottom. Healthy food is the best preventative medicine, but a healthy lifestyle with quality sleep, exercise, socializing and relaxation are also major contributors to overall well being!

Wow, my son Luke absolutely crushed it with this deep dive on the skin-gut connection and acne! I was seriously impressed — it’s long, but packed with so much valuable info. He really nailed it. I’m so proud of you, Luke! You’re a natural, and I might just have to hand over the page to you. You rock!
Luke explains how gut health impacts skin inflammation and acne, and he’s spot on. Of course you know what I would add — dairy, especially cow’s milk, is a major trigger for a lot of people as it contains hormones and inflammatory agents that can irritate the gut and show up as acne. Beyond what he covered, high-glycemic foods like sugary snacks, refined carbs, and even some processed foods can spike insulin and worsen breakouts. On the flip side, omega-3 rich foods like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts can help calm inflammation and support clearer skin. Zinc-rich foods like pumpkin seeds are also great for balancing hormones and reducing acne. And yes, probiotics can be a game-changer for balancing the gut microbiome and improving skin from the inside out.
Everyone’s gut is unique, so results vary, but this video is a fantastic starting point.

This message hits different when it starts in childhood. 💩
P**p is your body’s daily report card on gut health — it shows digestion, hydration, fiber, and microbiome balance.
Easy-to-pass, well-shaped, right-color stools? = thriving gut.
Changes? Could signal diet the need for dietary tweaks, dehydration, or conditions like celiac or IBD that early catch can help big time.
Hippocrates was onto something: “All disease begins in the gut.” Modern science backs it — microbiome impacts immunity, mood, everything. All healing begins in the gut, too!
When we talk p**p openly (no shame, just facts) with kids, explaining it as the body’s natural waste exit and encouraging them to notice patterns , we build real health literacy.
It reduces embarrassment, prevents withholding, and guides better choices around food, water, and movement.
That’s why I wrote How to Be a P**p Detective! — a fun, detective-style kids’ book with simple checkpoints like the 5 S’s: Shape, Soft, Sink, Shade, Shoot. (New edition in the works! 👀)
Starting these convos early breaks taboos, empowers kids to tune into their bodies, and sets up lifelong awareness (hello, earlier colorectal cancer detection down the road).
Talking p**p at every age isn’t awkward — it’s essential preventive medicine.

🌙✨ Prioritizing restful sleep isn’t just about feeling refreshed—it’s a game-changer for gut health, insulin resistance, and PCOS management! 😴💤
New research highlights how poor sleep quality disrupts gut microbiota balance, ramps up inflammation, and worsens insulin resistance—a key driver of PCOS symptoms like irregular cycles, weight challenges, and androgen excess. Studies show women with PCOS often face higher rates of sleep disturbances (like OSA), creating a vicious cycle that fuels metabolic issues. Breaking it? Better sleep improves insulin sensitivity and supports a healthier gut microbiome for hormone balance! 🚀
Teens are hit hard too: Recent stats reveal ~77% of US high schoolers get insufficient sleep (

Thank you to Phoenix Magazine for featuring my story in “Back from the Brink” and for the beautiful opportunity to share my near-death experience with your wonderful team.
A special shoutout to the incredibly talented writer Meredith and photographer Mirelle—both of you were an absolute joy to work with. Your kindness, professionalism, and genuine care made the process so meaningful and comfortable. I’m truly grateful for the way you captured and told my story.
Reliving that life-threatening blood clot at 18 while talking it through really hit me—how close I came, and how completely focused I was on earning that perfect grade to become a doctor. Back then, it felt like the only thing that mattered—more than life itself—but the experience itself woke me up to the bigger truth: that life is the most precious gift, and living it fully—with gratitude in every moment—is what counts most.
This near-death crisis was one of the biggest turning points in my journey. It not only confirmed without a doubt that I was meant for this profession, but it gave me the strength and resolve to fight for it, no matter what. I’ve always been deeply aware of the people God has placed in my path to help me become a doctor, and I’m so thankful to be a pediatrician at Camelback Pediatrics, caring for amazing families, being part of their journeys, and healing alongside such a wonderful team every day. Most of all, I’m grateful for my faith, my family (as a mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, etc.), my friends, and the blessing of another day to love, serve, and heal.
Thank you, Phoenix Magazine, Meredith, and Mirelle, for giving me this platform to reflect on and share that life-changing moment so powerfully. I’m beyond grateful. ❤️
