I am a Certified Professional Midwife, licensed to practice midwifery in the state of Arizona. Over the course of my four years of training I apprenticed under two midwives here in the Valley—

Wendi Cleckner, and Crystal Peña—and also ventured to the Philippines for 3 months during my final year to work with seven midwives at the Shiphrah Birthing Home in Taytay. My training includes Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP®). I have been attending births in varying capacities since 2004. Midwifery education is a passion of mine, and I seek to incorporate it into my practice locally and internationally. A particular area of interest is to help train women from a given area in the art and science of midwifery to promote sustainable women’s wellness in communities around the world. I was born and raised in the heart of the Southwest, Santa Fe, New Mexico, to a rug merchant and statistician. There I grew up in a culturally diverse and eclectic community. After hearing the word ‘midwife’ for the first time a passion was ignited, and I have been responding to that call ever since. It is my sincere belief that the impact of birth extends beyond that one moment, and directly relates to the spiritual, social and emotional health of the woman and her family—-influencing the wellbeing and progress of the community at large. Beyond my love of all things connected to birth I enjoy immersing myself in the natural beauty of deserts, forests and anywhere near to water. I’m also an avid reader and podcast listener. My husband and I have enjoyed living in the Phoenix Valley for over a decade.

Are you wondering what midwifery care looks like? Well, it’s intimate, personal, warm and loving. I attend visits in family’s homes—even during this new time. There are some changes these days that include PPE, but my hope is that all the good feelings are still able to flow. I consider a true honor to be able to walk alongside families as they grow and develop. It never gets old seeing babies become toddlers become children. (📷: .fatima)

This week hold two days of great significance to me: International Day of the Midwife (May 5), and Mother’s Day (May 10 this year). That reality holds a certain magic, with Life and Love at all its core.✨

Show some love to the mamas in your life, y’all! 🤱🏿

And if there’s a midwife in your world share some of the light with her too. 💫

Do you know what completely delights me? The placenta, that’s what. It serves several functions in pregnancy, including helping to produce hormones like oxytocin, the “love hormone” that encourages the bond growing between mother and baby. Most mammals consume their placenta after birth, and recently we’ve tapped into that primal wisdom. There aren’t yet a rich store of clinical studies to tap into, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the goods within may contribute greatly to postpartum rejuvenation, helping with iron replacement, decrease postpartum bleeding, and elevate mood. The idea may not be palatable, so including a bit in a smoothie daily during the first week or two postpartum can make it a bit more doable. In Heng Ou’s book, The First Forty Days, she has a couple recipes. My favorite is naturally the one with chocolate:
2-inch piece fresh or frozen placenta
2 tablespoons cacao powder or unsweetened dark cocoa powder
2 tablespoons peanut butter or almond butter
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon honey
1-2 cups coconut water (as needed for your desired consistency)
Optional toppings: shredded coconut, goji berries, cacao nibs, or chocolate chips

Place all ingredients in a blender, adding a generous splash of cold water to thaw the placenta piece if frozen. Blend everything until smooth. Drink immediately.

You could always omit the placenta if you just want a delicious smoothie! Enjoy!

Dear Instagram,

It’s nice to meet you! For those who may not know me, I wanted to introduce myself. 👋🏽 My name is Mona, and I’m the midwife behind Light Upon Light Midwifery here in Phoenix. 🌞 Since 2017 I’ve been officially midwifing but I’ve attended births in varying capacities for something like 17 years (😳). I’m often asked how I came into midwifery, and the story goes like this: one day when I was just 16 I was watching a show about birth and just when I was leaving the room someone said the word ‘midwife,’ and I just froze. In my bones I knew that was what I was supposed to be. After that I was able to take a class through my high school that allowed me to do a medical mentorship with a medical professional of my choosing, and I was able to shadow 3 Nurse Midwives throughout my senior year. I attended about 10 births, and a number of other medical procedures related to women’s health and I was completely transfixed. 🤩
The power of women was so palpably evident, and it all felt like magic. 🌺
Over the next few years while I served families as a doula I learned more about midwifery and birth, and discovered the beauty of homebirth 🏠, and found my calling as a Certified Profession Midwife.

After attending the birth of hundreds of women, in February of 2019 I had my own birth experience. It. Was. A. Trip.💥 And while I had always had a profound appreciation of the postpartum period, it deepened even further when I had my son. 🤱🏽

So that’s a little bit about me! I’d love to get to know you, and all the questions your have about midwifery and homebirth.

Xoxo 😚

THIS is the article I wish I had when I was in my first and second trimester, feeling guilty about my imperfect diet as I dealt with nausea and vomiting. My mantra became “It’s not just about nutrients; get in calories where you can.” I think this article would have helped support that idea when I needed it most. Let me know your thoughts!

This article was recently shared with me, and I’m so grateful it was. Our past certainly does find its way into the birthing room, and those we surround ourselves with at that time have a profound impact on how we move through each physical and emotional wave. If you have birthed, how did those around you make or break the space?

Yup. It’s cold season! This is an older post from Aviva Romm, but the tips are as good as ever. These are great go-to’s whether or not you’re pregnant.

However, if you are pregnant or nursing please be sure to consult your midwife or care provider before self-treating with any natural medicines✨

Uh oh. You know the symptoms. You’ve got a cold. Or worse, the flu. Actually, most of the time when people think they have the flu, it’s just a really bad cold. For the most part, knowing which you have doesn’t make that much difference, especially since we now know that Tamiflu, the most comm...
