Relationships may be one of the most overlooked drivers of long-term health.

We often think of genes as our destiny, but the science of epigenetics tells a very different story.

The people around us, our stress levels, sleep, movement, nutrition, and daily habits can all influence how our genes are expressed over time.

In this clip from my conversation on the Difference Talks podcast, I share why meaningful human connection may be one of the strongest predictors of health and longevity.

I’m excited to share that my guest appearance on the Difference Talks podcast is out today.

I had a great conversation about something that often gets overlooked when it comes to longevity.

Your genes are not your destiny.

In this episode, we dive into what actually drives long term health, including diet, relationships, exercise, stress management, and sleep, and why these everyday choices matter more than most people think.

If you are looking for a more proactive approach to your health, this is a great place to start.

There has been a meaningful shift in how we talk about fat in the diet, and in many ways, that is a positive step forward.

For decades, fat was widely viewed as something to avoid. This led to the rise of low-fat products that were often replaced with added sugars and processed ingredients.

But the real conversation is more nuanced.

We do need healthy fats.

Foods like extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, and wild-caught fish can play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health, brain function, and overall longevity.

The focus should not be on eliminating fat, but on understanding which types of fats support long-term health.

As with most things in nutrition, quality and balance matter.

There is a lot of conversation right now around increasing protein intake, especially with recent dietary guidelines putting more emphasis on it.

But one of the biggest gaps I see in clinical practice is something much simpler.

We are not getting enough fiber.

In fact, less than 10% of Americans meet their daily fiber needs. And that has a meaningful impact on overall health.

Fiber plays a key role in supporting the gut microbiome, which influences metabolism, inflammation, and long-term health outcomes.

Instead of focusing only on what to add, it may be worth asking what is missing.

More whole vegetables. More fruits. More of the foods that support how our bodies are designed to function.

Simple shifts, done consistently over time, can make a real difference.

Curious, have you been more focused on protein or fiber in your daily routine?

One of the simplest pieces of advice I give patients is to learn how to recognize the difference between real food and processed food.

It does not have to be complicated.

If something is packaged, has a long list of ingredients, and you cannot recognize or pronounce many of them, it is likely more processed than you realize.

Real food is usually made up of simple, whole ingredients.

Awareness alone can change how you approach what you eat.

Curious how you think about this…
Do you look at ingredient labels when choosing foods?

So many people believe that if something runs in their family, it is only a matter of time before it happens to them.

Heart disease. Diabetes. Alzheimer’s. Cancer.

I hear this all the time.

But the truth is, your genes are not your destiny.

What you do every day has a powerful influence on your health over time. It can shape whether these conditions develop, how they progress, and the impact they have on your life.

You have more control than you think.

Curious to hear your thoughts…
Did you grow up believing your health was predetermined, or that you could influence it?

Most people are doing way too much to try to live longer… and still getting nowhere.

I had a great conversation with Dan LeMoine on the Fear No Food Podcast about what actually matters when it comes to longevity and metabolic health.

This isn’t about extreme routines or chasing trends. It’s about understanding what really works and applying it consistently.

If you’ve ever felt stuck despite trying to “do everything right,” this will give you a different perspective.

I recently joined Dr. Melinda Ring on the Next Level Health podcast for a great conversation about longevity and the power we each have to influence our long term health.

Many people believe that if chronic diseases run in their family, their future health is already written. But the science tells a very different story.

Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity are influenced not only by genetics, but also by our daily habits.

What we eat, how we move, how we sleep, and how we manage stress all play a major role in how our genes are expressed over time.

The future of our health is influenced far more by what we do each day than by the genes we inherit.

Please be the voice of the people in Iran who are being tortured and murdered by the regime for peacefully asking for basic freedoms that we take for granted here in the United States and around the world. As noted in recent testimony at the United Nations by human rights lawyer Dr. Payam Akhavan, “this is the worst mass murder in the contemporary history of Iran. Our beautiful country has become a cemetery…this is an extermination…there is no war between military forces. There is only a war by the Islamic Republic against unarmed youth crying for a better future.” What is happening there now is a crime against humanity, silence is complicity so I am sharing this for us all to be their voice during this time of desperate need. ̇ran 💚🤍❤️
