Lindsay Clancy’s mother took the stand Monday. Her sister followed. Then her former mother-in-law, a labor and delivery nurse, the grandmother of the three children, testified in Lindsay’s defense and said Lindsay came to her begging for help.
Her family knew.
In October 2022, Lindsay texted her mom: “Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong.” In December, in her own kitchen, she told her mother and her husband she was having thoughts of harming her children. Her sister testified that by late December she’d had suicidal thoughts every day for a month.
And before anything else is said: three children are dead. Whatever the verdict, this is an absolute tragedy. This family will carry what they did and did not do for the rest of their lives. They deserve our compassion, not our judgmental comment sections.
Ask the honest question: would you have known? Would you have known the sentence in the kitchen was a medical emergency and not a confession? Nobody teaches a family what to do with that sentence. There is no class for that kitchen. Even the nurse in the family could not make the system hold her.
I’m a therapist with a perinatal mental health certification through Postpartum Support International. Slides 10 through 12 provide suggestions of what to say and who to call. The difference between scary thoughts that horrify her and thoughts that stop feeling wrong. And please remember: this illness comes and goes. Lucid at 2pm, gone by 2am. Believe the worst hour, not the best one.
Telling is step one. The people who hear it need instructions and the system needs way more support in place.

(Not deciding guilt. The jury has evidence I don’t. I’m reading testimony on the record.)
