Building on a strong foundation of cancer care in Cumberland, today marked the grand opening of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at the Schwab Family Cancer Pavilion, bringing expanded access to advanced treatments, groundbreaking research, and hundreds of clinical trials closer to home for patients across the region.

As part of one of the nation’s largest cancer treatment networks — and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region — patients at UPMC Western Maryland now have access to the expertise of more than 200 oncology specialists and over 600 active clinical trials through UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

“UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is built on the concept of bringing cancer treatment to the communities where patients live,” said Beth Wild, president, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. “Many cancer treatments require multiple visits over several weeks or months, so it’s important that patients have access to high-quality cancer care without traveling long distances. This is made possible through the more than 80 UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers located in four states and internationally in three countries.”

All patients receiving cancer treatment at any UPMC Hillman Cancer Center facility, including UPMC Western Maryland, have access to groundbreaking cancer research and more than 600 clinical trials underway at UPMC Hillman and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Western Maryland is part of the network that boasts over 200 world-class oncologists in medical, radiation and surgical oncology and precision medicine in immunotherapy.

The oncology team in Cumberland will collaborate with colleagues across this network to ensure that patients benefit from a multidisciplinary disciplinary approach and have access to the latest techniques and treatments available in the oncology field — some of which are only available at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

“We are thrilled to welcome UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to UPMC Western Maryland at the Schwab Family Cancer Pavilion. This enhancement of services expands upon the great care our community is
accustomed to receiving right here in Cumberland. UPMC continues to fulfill its commitment to Western Maryland, ensuring the latest technologies, equipment, and procedures are available to the communities we serve locally,” said Michele Martz, president, UPMC Western Maryland. “It has been a pleasure to see the impact Hillman has already made and witness a new level of expertise blend seamlessly with our already exemplary program.”

The opening of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at the Schwab Family Cancer Pavilion also comes as UPMC Western Maryland advances plans to add a new, advanced linear accelerator, supported in part by $2.75 million in federal funding secured by U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks and $2.35 million in state funding over the last three years towards this project as a result of the generous support from Governor Wes Moore, Senator Mike McKay and Delegate Jason Buckel. Once in place, the new technology will enhance radiation oncology services in Cumberland by allowing for even more precise treatment while helping ensure patients throughout the region can continue to access high-quality cancer care close to home.

“Too many Maryland families face the heartbreaking reality of a cancer diagnosis each year. It’s critical that our hospitals are prepared to help them battle this disease. That’s why we fought to secure this $2.75 million in federal funding to help bring world-class cancer research and treatment closer to home for patients in Mountain Maryland. The opening of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center will help more residents access the care they need right in their own communities,” said Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“When someone receives a cancer diagnosis, the last thing they should worry about is traveling long distances to access treatment. Expanding access to care helps reduce burdens during life’s most difficult moments. That’s why I was proud to work alongside Senator Van Hollen to help secure $2.75 million in federal funding to support comprehensive radiation therapy services at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. This new center represents something deeply important: bringing lifesaving, high-quality cancer care closer to home for the people of Western Maryland,” said Senator Angela Alsobrooks.

During Elizabeth Forward High School’s Student Government Association's annual Night of Service, 90 students came together to complete 10 service projects — including assembling 42 care bags for patients at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Each tote was thoughtfully filled with comfort items that included a blanket, puzzle, lotion, and lip balm, then decorated with messages of encouragement and care.

This is the third consecutive year these students have supported our patients in such a meaningful way. We are so grateful for their continued support! A special thank you to student leaders Brookelynn and Abigail, along with faculty advisor Dr. Jen Spiegel, for helping make this act of kindness possible. Thank you, Elizabeth Forward High School Student Government Association, for bringing comfort, hope, and heart to our cancer center!

As an oncology nurse practitioner at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Beaver, Pa., Germaine M. has supported and taken care of many patients throughout the years.

But when she found a lump in her own breast, her world changed.

Germaine was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and underwent preventative chemotherapy and radiation, followed by five years of tamoxifen, a hormonal therapy drug used to block estrogen and help stop tumor growth.

At the time of her diagnosis, Germaine was only 35 and had been undergoing infertility treatment.

Because her duties at UPMC Hillman had included counseling young patients about fertility preservation measures, she knew what to expect.

“I had a role to promote fertility after cancer therapy and spoke with many young patients — male and female — regarding egg and s***m preservation prior to chemotherapy," she says. "I am an advocate for this.”

She underwent embryo preservation in the event her cancer treatments had left her with to chemotherapy-induced sterility.

Still, after all she'd been through trying to get pregnant, cancer treatment was a huge disappointment.

“I was angry,” she says. “We were trying to conceive for four years and now my dream of having children had to be put on hold for another five years.”

Finally, after completing therapy, Germaine was cancer-free and given the greenlight for an embryo transplant. She went through the process twice and now has two daughters.

Germaine continued with her life as a mother and nurse practitioner, helping patients and their families through some of the most difficult times of their lives, now with a new perspective.

Unfortunately, nearly 10 years later, Germaine found a lump in her opposite breast and was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

The diagnosis hit harder than the first.

“I had done everything possible to prevent a recurrence,” she says. “But it still came back.”

Despite the shock, Germaine continued to work as a nurse practitioner for another seven to eight years while undergoing multiple treatments— a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, estrogen-blocking therapies, immunotherapy, and clinical trials.

She's now been living with metastatic breast cancer for 12 years. Her treatment will continue indefinitely, but she remains hopeful, always watching for new advancements that might give her more time with her family.

Her personal journey gave her a unique understanding of the patients she served and often cared for breast cancer patients while undergoing the same treatments herself.

“We connected on a level that went beyond the provider–patient relationship,” she says. “We shared stories, hope, fears — everything.”

Many of those patients became part of her extended family.

Throughout her cancer experience, she has relied on the support of her care team, including her oncologist, Grace Tarabay-Caridad, MD.

“Everything people say about Dr. Tarabay is true,” Germaine says. “She will do anything for her patients. We worked together before she became my physician, and we quickly became friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have her in my life.”

Her greatest strength, she says, comes from her husband and daughters, who have witnessed difficult moments and have grown up with a profound understanding of resilience.

Today, Germaine is medically retired and misses the work she loved — the patients, the camaraderie, the purpose. But she remains active: traveling, skiing, staying involved in her daughters’ sports, and volunteering in their activities.

Her approach to life and illness remains steady and takes it one day at a time.

“I always told my patients ‘don’t give up because of the side effects,’” she says. “'Push through. There is light at the end of the tunnel.'”

Her message to anyone who hears her story is simple but urgent.

“Get your mammograms. Stay up to date. Take care of yourself.”

Despite the cold and rainy weather, supporters showed up in full force for AIM at Melanoma Foundation’s 11th Annual Steps Against Melanoma 5K in Pittsburgh on May 9, raising an incredible $58.8K to fund research and support patients and caregivers. All net proceeds support the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center site of the Melanoma Tissue Bank Consortium.

Dr. John M. Kirkwood, co-leader of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and Steven Scheidler, this year’s honoree, shared inspiring remarks about progress, hope, and resilience during the opening ceremony.

Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, volunteered, and gave so generously. Your support fuels discovery for patients and families facing melanoma.
