Welcome to Pitt Neurosurgery, Dr. Timoteo Almeida!

Dr. Almeida joins the department as an Assistant Professor with a secondary appointment in Radiation Oncology. Dual trained as a neurosurgeon and radiation oncologist, his practice brings together functional neurosurgery, neuromodulation, MRI-guided focused ultrasound, and stereotactic radiosurgery.

He completed fellowship training at the UPMC Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery and serves as co-principal investigator of the TUNE Trial, studying low-intensity focused ultrasound neuromodulation in drug-resistant epilepsy.

Dr. Joseph Maroon, clinical professor and vice chair of Pitt Neurosurgery, served as visiting professor at the University of Michigan on July 1 and 2, delivering two lectures to faculty and residents.

His talks covered creativity and resilience in neurosurgery and the past, present, and future of sports-related brain and spine injuries.

Pitt's Surreality Lab was featured in two sessions at AWE USA 2026, a leading conference for extended reality and artificial intelligence. The lab's mixed reality surgical guidance served as a healthcare example in a Dell Technologies and NVIDIA panel, presented alongside Stanford University, and was highlighted by NVIDIA's David Chu during the "Building Physical AI" keynote.

A collaboration between the Department of Neurological Surgery and the School of Computing and Information, the Surreality Lab is co-directed by Edward Andrews, MD, and Jacob Biehl, PhD, and develops augmented reality and AI tools that support surgeons in the operating room.

Congratulations to Dr. Costas Hadjipanayis on a new grant from the Pediatric Cancer Foundation to advance treatment for Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG), one of the most aggressive childhood brain tumors.

In lab models, pairing light-activated photodynamic therapy with MEK inhibitors significantly reduced DMG tumor cell survival, even in cells resistant to MEK inhibitors alone. The new project tests whether adding radiation can improve outcomes for children.

Our incoming PGY-1 residents got an early look inside the new UPMC Kamin Tower, where paired neurosurgery ORs built around a shared rail-mounted intraoperative MRI will let surgeons image the brain mid-procedure without ever moving the patient. A new home for the next generation of image-guided care, and these residents will help shape it.

Georgios A. Zenonos, MD, FAANS, was an honored guest at the Beijing International Congress for Neuroendoscopy in Beijing, China, one of the largest conferences of its kind, attended by experts from over 30 countries. He delivered the keynote presentation, "The State-of-the-Art in Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery."
