Plantar fasciitis affects the plantar regions of the foot, namely the heel, arch, and midfoot.

When too much stress is put on the plantar fascia, or the connective tissue that stretches from the heel to the ball of your foot, inflammation, overtightening, and tearing may arise.

This can cause foot pain. Because of plantar fasciitis, you may experience tearing with the first steps you take in the morning each day.

Running is a fantastic physical activity, but injuries can happen! The most common running injuries are plantar fasciitis (heel pain), shin splints, stress fractures, and Morton's neuroma.

If your child or teen is complaining about any heel pain, or other pain in the feet and ankles, reach out to us right away for an appointment.

To set up your child athlete for success, the APMA does have some suggestions for buying running shoes:

"The appropriate footwear should:

- Provide shock absorption to help runners avoid injury. Running shoes are made for high-impact forward motion and should not be used for sports with lateral movement.

- Match your foot’s arch type (high, medium, low). A podiatric physician can measure your feet and let you know what type to look for.

- Be replaced after 600–800 miles of running or walking, or every 6–8 months."
