Heartland Academy of Texas is a transition program in Plano designed to support young adults with special needs as they build confidence, independence, and practical life skills after high school.

No two clients walk through our doors with the exact same goals, and we don’t believe their plans should look the same either!

Jenny, one of our Lead Instructors, shares how we assess each client from the start and create an individualized lesson plan based on their specific needs and goals.

Each plan is broken down into smaller goals and activities that help clients make meaningful progress toward the bigger picture. We take this process seriously so clients, families, and our team are all on the same page from day one and can see real growth along the way. ✨

At Heartland Academy, we focus on independence, life skills, community involvement, social connection, and helping each client reach their individual goals, while having plenty of fun along the way!

We offer flexible scheduling options, including half days, several days a week, or full-time Monday–Friday.

We now accept Medicaid waivers, are an ISS provider, and also offer private pay options. 👏

A trip to the grocery store might feel like a simple part of the week, but for our clients, it’s a chance to practice so many important skills! 🛒💙

On our recent group outing, everyone had the chance to walk the aisles, find what they were looking for, compare options, make their own choices, and go through the checkout process.

These are the everyday moments we love at Heartland. Getting out into the community gives young adults with disabilities the opportunity to practice independence in real-life situations, build confidence, and learn that they are capable of doing more and more on their own!

When our clients sit down for painting, drawing, or hands-on projects at Heartland, it’s not just about the finished piece; it’s about the skills being built along the way.

Fine motor control. Following multi-step directions. Making choices independently.

Sitting with a task through to completion. Expressing something without needing words at all.

Creative activities are one of the many tools we use to help our clients build confidence, focus, and independence, all while doing something they genuinely enjoy.

It’s a good reminder that at Heartland, growth doesn’t always look like a lesson plan. Sometimes it looks like this. 🙌

At Heartland, progress can look like better communication with peers, developing new skills, gaining confidence, and finding a sense of purpose. Small steps deserve to be celebrated just as much as the big ones.

Great news! We are now an ISS provider, in addition to accepting Medicaid waivers and private pay. This allows us to welcome a whole new group of clients.

Creativity, connection, and learning are all part of a day at Heartland! 💚

From painting and puzzles to hands-on activities and creative projects, our students have opportunities to explore their interests, practice new skills, and enjoy meaningful time with their peers.

For those new here, Heartland Academy is a specialized day program for adults with disabilities, providing a supportive environment focused on continued learning, independence, life skills, and community.

Activities like these help encourage creativity, problem-solving, focus, independence, and social connection, all while giving students a chance to have fun and try something new. 💚

Our fall semester for Heartland’s year-round program is starting soon! If your loved one recently graduated from high school and you’re looking for a place where they can continue learning, growing, building friendships, and enjoying new experiences, we’d love to welcome you to Heartland.

One of the things that makes our program unique is the flexibility we offer families.
