A new name. A new little home on the internet. And, hopefully, a lot more room to wander, play, and just find joy in creating.
I wrote the first post for the new Fernlight blog about where Fernlight has been, where it’s going, and what I’m choosing to carry (and release) along the way.
Here’s a little piece of it:
I think, maybe, one of the most beautiful parts of Fernlight is that it’s always meant to evolve and to grow.
What began as Fernlight Studio, a creative and healing space, a business, a collection of offerings I tried very hard to shape into something cohesive, has become Fernlight Creative.
And this time, I’m surrendering full control and allowing Fernlight to take the reins.
For a long time, I’ve had a complicated relationship with turning the things I love into things I sell. I love making art. I love sharing it. I love the strange magic of someone seeing something I made and deciding they want to bring it into their own life and home.
But the problem I face with that, is that making can very easily become producing. In today’s world – trying to have an art business means:
Creating becomes content.
Curiosity becomes branding.
Sharing becomes marketing.
And suddenly I’m wondering whether the thing I made fits a certain aesthetic, whether I should photograph it properly (which I rarely ever did), whether I need to make more, whether anyone would buy it, whether I should post today because I haven’t posted in a week and apparently the algorithm needs to be fed or no one will ever see anything I share.
Factor in my AuDHD, chronic illness, and the fact that I work full-time elsewhere…Fernlight Studio needed more from me than I could give to even build it up fully the way it needed, let alone maintain it.
And ultimately that isn’t what I want Fernlight to be anymore.
