You've tried the antihistamines. You've tried the nasal sprays. What happens when you're still miserable every allergy season?
Allergy immunotherapy is different because we're not simply trying to control symptoms. We're gradually exposing the immune system to allergens to promote tolerance and change the allergic response over time.

Allergy shots are doing much more than simply treating a stuffy nose.
Allergen immunotherapy gradually exposes the immune system to increasing amounts of the allergens causing symptoms. Over time, that can reduce the allergic inflammatory response and promote immune tolerance.
In our practice, patients go through a gradual weekly build-up phase and then transition to monthly maintenance therapy.

Sleep apnea treatment continues to evolve.
A recent systematic review found that non-invasive electrical stimulation reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnea in several studies, although improvements in oxygen levels and other outcomes were less consistent. It's a promising technology, but more research is needed before it becomes standard treatment.

Many people are told, "Your tests are normal," but they still feel dizzy every day.
Current research suggests that anxiety and chronic dizziness often reinforce one another. The symptoms are real, and understanding how the brain's balance system works can open the door to effective treatment.

One of the biggest lessons I try to teach my patients is that an LPR flare does not mean they've failed.
Most flare-ups are the result of several small factors coming together—sleep, stress, meal timing, caffeine, and other lifestyle habits—not one single meal.
Instead of panicking, take a step back, look for patterns, and return to the basics.

There are a few myths about LPR that I hear over and over again in my office. The truth is that recovery usually requires understanding the whole picture—not just treating symptoms.

Can migraines and sudden hearing loss be related?
A new study found a surprisingly high prevalence of migraine features in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. While the study does not establish that migraines cause hearing loss, it raises important questions about shared vascular and neurologic mechanisms that may help explain why some cases occur.
The clinical takeaway remains unchanged: sudden hearing loss is an emergency, and prompt evaluation and treatment offer the best chance for recovery.

When we think about pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, we often focus on the child. This research reminds us that the burden extends much further.
Families of children with persistent sleep apnea reported greater financial stress, more missed work and school, and lower quality of life than comparison families. These findings reinforce why continued evaluation is important when symptoms persist after surgery. Helping a child sleep better can improve the health and well-being of the entire family.

Adenoidectomy is commonly recommended for children with nasal obstruction, sleep-disordered breathing, recurrent infections, or chronic ear disease.
An interesting study found that children with significant adenoid enlargement also demonstrated improved smell identification after surgery. The likely explanation is simple: removing the obstruction behind the nose allows odor molecules to reach the olfactory receptors more effectively.
While improved smell isn't an indication for surgery, it's another reminder that restoring normal nasal airflow can have benefits beyond breathing.
