Social Media is full of "family estrangement" stories lately. Posts about college kids "going no contact." And a lot of blame being thrown at "therapists."

As a Family Therapist, I'm here to tell you, I got into this profession because Family is my first priority, and I believe that our families are fundamental to our mental health.

I tell every new client when they first meet me, that is why I chose this path to being a therapist.

I also tell every parent that every kid deserves to have the best relationship possible with all of the adults in their life.

"Best relationship possible" is what we can work on in therapy. We will talk about your priorities regarding respect, and communication, and values.

We will talk about boundaries, because boundaries make good relationships.

We'll talk about self-control, independence, accountability, and division of family roles.

Boundaries does not mean "no contact," it just means "this is the structure I need to stay in a good relationship with you."

If you want to improve the communication, respect, and connection in your family, come meet with me at Psych Ed Connections in Nocatee.

So often, people stay up late thinking over hard feelings. Or troubling worries. Thinking it over. And over.

Sometimes what you need is to TALK it over.

With an understanding family member. A wise friend. Or trusted therapist.

When thinking it over isn't helping, try Talking It Over.

A common word you might hear in mental health these days is "spiraling."

It's not a clinical term. People can understand it a little differently. But it's a useful metaphor.

Typically we use it to describe thoughts and feeling escalating our anxiety. Our insecurity. Or our anger. Upward.

But spirals can go down, too. Pay attention. Notice the times your anxiety, insecurity, or anger spirals DOWN.

What thoughts and behaviors help DE-escalate your feelings?

First jobs are hard, and you might not like yours. Don't despair if you discover you feel burned out and hate it.

It's just a temporary stepping stone.

Stay just long enough to achieve something. To boost your resume to help you get a better job.

The key is, don't quit until you HAVE that next job.

Get a promotion, a raise, a certification, a new skill to make you more hire-able for your next, BETTER job.

Your hard work is the thing that will bring the next opportunity.

Mistakes are how we learn.

How many things have you learned from being told once and then you could do it perfectly?

Compare that to how many things you had to first try doing badly, and mess it up, until you were better at it. Then good at it.

So what mistake have you made this week? What mistake did you learn from?

Maybe it was a conversation that went badly.
Maybe a picture you tried to hang that fell or is too crooked.
Maybe you ran out of gas or hit a curb.
Maybe your cookies burned, or you fell off a bike.
Maybe you lost a job or failed a class.
Maybe you let someone down.
Maybe you let yourself down.

You are never going to stop making mistakes and learning.

My Dad's favorite quote from his mother is that the only people who don't make mistakes are people who don't do anything.

So take a moment, take a breath, and think about a mistake you made this week. What did you learn?

Moms, do you feel overwhelmed by the stress in your life?

Do you worry you aren't doing your best on any of your goals, because there just isn't enough time in the day?

A life full of family activities and career opportunities just does not come with an endless supply of time and energy.

Sometimes all the things you've worked for, and dreamed of all your life, come with some hard decisions.

Saying YES to the most important things in your life will require saying NO to some other very valuable, rewarding things, too.

No one else can make those hard decisions for you. Counseling can help.

As a Family Therapist specializing in stress management and family systems, I can help you identify YOUR highest priorities, and focus your time and energy on what YOU value most.

You CAN enjoy your best life, with less stress and more joy. Schedule a counseling session with me today!
