Meet John, a recent graduate of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at St. Charles, who came to us after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. When John first arrived he had very limited use of his arms and legs and was unable to stand or perform functional tasks without the assistance of multiple therapists. Initial therapy sessions focused on increasing the length of time he could sit out of bed, improving his tolerance for standing upright, and enhancing his ability to complete simple self care tasks like feeding himself.

With each passing day, John showed steady improvement in all his therapies. Initially, he used a lift device to stand and the Andago gait training system to walk; upon discharge he was walking completely independently without a device.

John was determined to be independent in all areas and by the time he went home he could complete his entire self care routine unassisted. His unparalleled motivation, his skilled care team, and his dedicated family support allowed him to reach his goal of being able to go on walks with his wife again. We are so proud of John and wish him nothing but the best!
