This is a beautiful depiction of common experiences with not only school refusal, but a lot of external behaviors we see on the surface in children, and what might be happening underneath. All behavior is a form of communication!

I found this free resource image on SocialWorkersToolbox.com

And I wanted to share the message.
_______________________

Your Neurodivergent child isn't BAD because they refuse to go to school.

You might be tempted to punish and threaten them into compliance.

But you shouldn't.
_______________________

If you yell and threaten,
insult them and belittle them,
you aren't making things better.

You aren't helping them feel safe and supported.

No.

You are just amping up their panic and compounding their TRAUMA.
__________________________

What kind of trauma?

Well, being left for hours each day, in an environment where they are

bullied,
criticized,
chronically misunderstood,

labeled a ""diffcult" by staff,
rejected by peers,

overwhelmed by sensory input,
denied accomodations,

forced to suppress the stims and fidgeting that help them to stay emotionally regulated,

punished for giving IN to that dysregulation when it all becomes too much,

and ultimately
pushed past their capacity to cope academically, socially, and emotionally--

Yeah.

That can and DOES cause trauma.
__________________________

But its NOT THEIR fault.

And it's not YOURS, either.

All you parents REALLY want is for your child to be safe and SUCCEED--

And you are trying SO hard to make that happen,

but the SYSTEM treats YOUR family, like its the problem,

because the system is slow to adapt to learning differences--if it's even willing to adapt, at all!
___________________________

In all honesty, the system is leaving LOTS of kids unsupported.

Those who are Autistic, Dyslexic, ADHD, Dyspraxic, have SPD or Auditory Processing Disorders--

they are ALL at the bottom of the ladder.

But they aren't alone.
___________________________

Kids who are mobility limited, blind, deaf, who have Down Syndrome or Turner Syndrome--
they are there, too--

as are kids who speak English as a second language,

and racial minorities,

and anyone else who is Atypical when compared to society at large.
________________________

But here's the thing....

Can we call an educational system "Healthy and Good" if it leaves so many people out?

If it refuses to adapt to the needs of its members?

If it causes explicit HARM to its members, through its inaction?

No. We can't.
___________________________

So, your kid is frusterated with their only option and is rejecting something that's NOT good and NOT healthy...

Which makes them SMART.

They KNOW their needs aren't being met and they are tired of fighting for inclusion.

So help them!
________________________

It's your job to
INVESTIGATE and ADVOCATE

until your child feels heard,
better supported,
and safer.

So take a deep breath, commit to co-regulation and communication,

and start the peace negotiations with the team at school.
____________________________

Your child is weary of fighting for themselves, all alone.

They are tagging you to take over.

It's your turn, now.

And I believe that you can find a way (either with the system, or by seeking education OUTSIDE of it).

✨ Jam Hands FAQ ✨

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Here’s a quick peek at what you can expect from Jam Hands Family Therapy. Curious about our office, sessions, or just wondering if therapy is for you? We’ve got you covered! 👇

🎨 Q: Do you only see kids?
A: Nope! We see kids, teens, adults, couples, families, and the occasional grown-up who still snacks like a toddler (no judgment, same). 😋

🧠 Q: What kind of therapy do you do?
A: The kind that works with your brain, not against it. I mix neuroscience, attachment theory, play, and stories that actually make sense for your life—not someone else’s idea of it. ✨

🪑 Q: What’s the office like?
A: Think cozy couch, a calming view of the water, and enough fidgets to keep your hands happy. It’s a space made for comfort, curiosity, and a little bit of calm—for kids and grown-ups. 💆‍♀️🌊

📅 Q: Do you offer evening or weekend sessions?
A: Absolutely! Because not everyone’s life fits neatly into a 9-to-5. ⏰

💻 Q: Do you offer telehealth?
A: I do! I have a few telehealth spots available for teens and adults—especially helpful for folks outside the local area or who can’t physically make it in. For younger kids, in-person is best so they can access all the cool goodies in the office (spinning chairs, fidgets, art, and more!).

💰 Q: How much does it cost?
A: $180 per session, with reduced rate spots available for those experiencing financial hardships. Therapy shouldn’t break your brain or your budget. 💵

💳 Q: Do you accept insurance?
A: Not directly, but I work with Mentaya: https://app.mentaya.com/p/BizNWyCth4smI1KrZHMz to help make out-of-network insurance claims easier. They’ll guide you through the process to get reimbursed. 🙌

🤷 Q: Is it okay if I’m nervous?
A: Absolutely. Being human can be weird and hard. You don’t have to show up any certain way—just showing up is what matters. ✨

📬 Have a question we missed?
You could shout it into the void… but messaging me is way more effective 😉
