Whether evaluating a horse or human athlete- every decision starts with a thorough examination. Asking the right questions and building the clinical picture. While the veterinarian diagnosis exam and the physical therapy exam look different- you’d be surprised how many similarities there are!

This is a common misconception I hear all the time when it comes to strength training.

If you are a trainer and riding 8 horses a day…That is plenty of strength training, right?

It IS creating strength and endurance, but it is sport-specific training.

You don’t see professional football players only practicing on the field.

It is vital for high performance equestrian athletes to be training off-horse in order to maintain overall health/wellness AND to reduce injury risk.

🌟“These are the safest, most protective jumping boots!”🌟

“This wrap will keep all the tendons in your horse’s legs safe while you ride!”

“This will keep your horse safe on course!”

Marketing strategies are a funny thing.

I would ask some questions before investing in equipment that has been tagged to “reduce injury risk” and/or “protect and heal”.

There is very little research on injury in this sport. Equipment is modeled often with the idea of reducing injury or providing support but very few studies on specific equipment items have been conducted

Things to think about when you hear those fancy taglines:

Has research supported it?
Do we have case studies on it?
Have you spoken to your vet about it?
Is this even the right product to address the needs of your horse?

I don’t think every single thing we use in this sport has to be validated by research.

But…Do you know if there IS research on the current equipment you use?

Equestrians don’t have a lot of spare time - I get it. ⌚

Sometimes it seems like PT and off horse training can just be one more thing to add to your to-do list when you get home after a long day.

My goal is always to be able to provide clients with programming that is efficient and time conscious.

Because riders have a tough enough time prioritizing their own body, right?
