Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month may be over but ovarian cancer does not stop - it does not wait - it will be here until we find a way to test early, detect different stages early, discover better treatments, and support those affected with better resources and care.

They say that cancer doesn't have a face until it is someone you love. I saw the face of cancer take over one of the most beautiful women in the world - and she deserved better.

All women deserve better - and we can do better. Please continue to listen to your bodies, consult with your doctors, trust your instinct and know your risk.

With all the love I have for my sister, Robyn, I send to you - please love yourselves, please show love and kindness to those who need it (and we all need it), and please live your lives to the fullest - life is precious, please do not take it for granted.

When you don't know where to go, or what you will find when you get there - we often rely on faith. When someone you love is going first into the foggy unknown, you want to give them everything you can to help them, to guide them, to get them to where they are going even if you don't know the way.

I found this symbol years ago and when Robyn was in between her worlds, in the midst of her transition, I did not know what I could do to help her find her way. A dear and talented friend, Rebecca, agreed to henna this symbol on Robyn's hand - I later was able to tattoo it over my heart.

I hope that it helped my sister find her heaven, I hope that it guides me when I am scared and unsure, and someday, I hope it leads me to her again - somewhere over the rainbow, into the deep, wild and wonderous world that I pray she is happy, healthy, safe and smiling.

After weeks in ICU at Maine Med, the doctors finally told me what I never wanted to hear - that my sister's time was coming to an end, and quickly, and there was nothing more they could do.

When they told me she should go into hospice and I thought it was a temporary thing - it ultimately was. I read that most hospice stays were typically around 5-7 days - I couldn't breathe. I cuoldn't think - what did this mean??

In a room full of doctors, nurses, specialists, machines, and beeps and all the other hospital noises, I had to look at my sister and tell her that we had no other options, and that we now had to go to hospice.

It is, to date, the hardest thing I have ever had to do. To look at her thinning, beautiful face, and say, this is what we have to do - and her looking at me saying, no! We'll figure it out! We'll figure it out!

I wish we could have just run away and lived together on some tropical beach for the rest of our lives. Instead, we moved to the Hospice of Southern Maine and were met with the kindest, most amazing women - the valkyries of the hospice. I will forever be grateful to those women - for treating her with respect, love and kindness - for holding me as I cried for an hour in the dark room listening to the last breaths of my dearest sister, Robyn.

Hospice is not something we want to think about in our regular life, but when you are faced with that option, I hope that we all have the care and comfort that these women gave my sister.

When I moved back to Portland, I relied on Robyn to give me directions to wherever we were going. "Someday," she told me, "I won't be here to tell you which way to go." Sure, I thought, but you're here now, so left or right??

She would just smile and turn up the radio, and say, "you know where to go, just go. If we get lost, we'll figure it out."

We always figured things out - together. Since the days of pulling rent together and eating saltine cracker packs - we figured it out.

She was right that I eventually got my bearings and found my way around - I hear her voice when I'm hesitant and I trust the journey. She gave me more than directions - she gave me direction.
