Did you know that creating time and distance between someone in crisis and a lethal method can save their life?

Lethal means safety is one of the most evidence-based su***de prevention strategies we have — and it's something all of us can practice. Whether it's locking up medications, securing fi****ms, or simply knowing how to have the conversation, small steps make a real difference.

A few things to remember:
🔒 Store medications in a lock box or dispose of extras
🔒 Lock fi****ms and store ammunition separately
💬 Asking someone about access to means does NOT put the idea in their head — it opens a door
📞 Save 988 — the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7

And a reminder for our Scioto County community — the Scioto County Su***de Prevention Coalition has FREE gun locks available. Reach out to Amy Hamm at 740-355-8617 to get one.

Suicidal crises are often temporary. Your actions can create the space someone needs to get through it. 💙

💙 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference Recap 💙

What an incredible day! We were honored to host our 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference alongside the Adams, Lawrence, and Scioto County CIT Training Program — bringing together nearly 30 dedicated first responders for a full day of wellness, connection, and education.

We kicked off the morning with a powerful keynote from Austin Hall, whose opening on first responder wellness set a beautiful tone for the day. From there, our amazing speakers covered it all:

🔹 Peer Support — Steve Click, Ohio Dept. of Public Safety
🔹 Building Resiliency & Stress Management — Nicole Riley, Bureau of Criminal Justice Services
🔹 Su***de Care & Sleep Wellness — Courtney Ruggles, Shawnee State University
🔹 Financial Wellness — Melissa Justice & Chelsey Mitilien
🔹 The Benefits of Animal Therapy — Kim Dutey, Hamilton Fire Department
🔹 Nutrition & Fitness — Tabitha Crank

We also held our 2026 CIT Award Ceremony, recognizing outstanding individuals across our tri-county area:
🏆 1 CIT Officer of the Year
⭐ 2 CIT Awards of Excellence
💛 2 CIT Champion Awards

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors — thank you to The Ribber for providing lunch, Glenwood Behavioral Health for breakfast, and Market Street Cafe for the delicious cookies! And a heartfelt thank you to The Behavioral Health Board of Adams, Lawrence & Scioto County for making this event a reality year after year.

To every speaker, sponsor, award recipient, and attendee — THANK YOU. Our first responders give so much to our communities. Days like this are for them. 💙

🏆 2026 CIT Awards — 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference

At our 2nd Annual 1st Responder Wellness Conference, we are proud to honor the extraordinary individuals who exemplify the heart and soul of Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT). This year, we are pleased to recognize five outstanding award recipients who have demonstrated the defining qualities of a true CIT professional — empathy, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those in mental health crisis.

This year's award categories include:
🥇 CIT Officer of the Year - Josh Justice
Awarded to the officer who has gone above and beyond in demonstrating exceptional skill, leadership, and dedication in crisis intervention throughout the year.

⭐ CIT Award of Excellence - Heaven James & Chase Conley
Presented to individuals who have shown outstanding performance and commitment in applying CIT principles to protect, serve, and support individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

💙 CIT Champion Award - Julie Bias & Courtney Roach
Given to those who champion the mission of CIT both in the field and within their communities — advocating for mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and inspiring others to embrace a compassionate approach to crisis response.
Each of these honorees embodies the true spirit of CIT — meeting individuals in their most vulnerable moments with patience, understanding, and dignity. They remind us that first responders are not only protectors of public safety, but also beacons of hope for those in crisis.
