MY BED

There is a place
that comforts me.
Where I can rest my weary bones,
upon a spot that feels like heaven.
Sweet and special.
Where I am covered in the softest blanket
that hugs me as a storm rages outside.
A place where I rest and feel safe,
and refresh myself after day's end.
As I drift off to distant lands,
where I can see my grandparents
who run to greet me
to make up for years lost.
And in this land
I talk and move with ease.
A dream come true,
but only for a short time.
As I awake
in morning dawn.
A ray of light through parted curtains.
My sleepy eyes begin to open.
The smell of breakfast being made.
My cozy bed
that holds me tight.
Protects me so,
and takes me to a place
I don't want to leave,
but will visit again.

I wrote this poem for an assignment at school. I'm grateful for all the work these heroes accomplished when there were few examples of change makers out there. I'm navigating a less harrowing path because of their leadership.

I am from
The heroes
Who came before me.
Stronger than the forces that
Attempted to define them, and
Braver than the systems that
Tried to control them.
I am from
Ido's wisdom
And Naoki's heart.
From DJ's hope
And Jordyn's nerve.
Who so thoroughly upended expectations
Is a precious stone in my foundation.
I am from
The voices
Who screamed out to be heard.

This journey isn’t easy.

When a parent chooses to show up every day, with patience and love, it changes everything.
