Resistance gets a bad rap. It’s a myth that as a client in therapy, you’re *supposed* to be open and compliant to whatever the therapist offers and invites you to do. Not true. At all.

Resistance is necessary in therapy (and in life!). It’s information into our deeper world. It’s code for what happened to us, and what we weren’t allowed to speak up about. Resistance is your NO. Resistance is your protection.

It’s your body’s boundary.

So listen to it when you don’t want to do something your therapist (or anybody else) may be asking you to do. In therapy, it’s okay and even important to say No. It can give me, as well as yourself, a better understanding into your world.

Let’s talk about support.

We seek a therapist when we feel alone, confused and/or overwhelmed with life. We look for someone to help us work through this discomfort, with support and guidance. And as much as we may crave this type of support, it can be very difficult to take it in.

So therapy is not just about taking in support, it’s also about how and why we are not able to take in support. How we may feel scared, undeserving, overwhelmed and distrusting of the support that is given to us.

My trainer has said to me “When you give support to your clients, you bring up all the trauma from their past.”

So, part of therapy is the acceptance that you are not required to take in support. I can not only accept your resistance to my support, but help you to explore that with you.

And in doing that type of therapeutic work, you are taking in support. See what happened there? ;-)

Reach out if you want to explore this more. I’m here to support 😊😊😊

Your presence is the most precious gift you can give to another human being. - Marshall Rosenberg

As a therapist, I sometimes wonder if I’m doing enough for my clients. I think about how I could help them feel better or help them achieve more. And then I realize that is not what therapy is about. It’s about presence. Its about giving my clients the gift of being here... with them... in their experience.

That, in and of itself, can be the most important gift.

What kind of presence can you give yourself this week? And what kind of presence can you give others?

Last holiday season, I was given this book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy. It’s a picture book full of simple yet wise sentiments. The drawings are also simple and inspiring.

It’s that time where it’s safer to go virtual than it is to stay with the norm. I was hesitant at first given the impact face-to-face connection has on therapeutic connection but virtual (video and phone) has to be done to protect the most vulnerable in our community.
I hope to allow my clients the same “space” for continued safety, vulnerability and emotional support, especially during this crazy time. It’s actually going pretty well so far!
