We all grew up learning about the basic 5 senses, but in Occupational Therapy, we actually look at 8 primary sensory systems!

Every second of the day, your child’s brain is receiving, filtering, and organizing signals from these systems to help them move, learn, regulate their emotions, and stay safe.

Swipe for a quick guide to the 8 Sensory Systems and what they actually do!

📌 Save this post as a handy cheat sheet for your child’s sensory development, or share it with a friend!

Struggling at the dinner table? It might be more than just "picky eating." 🍽

When children spit out meats, gag at certain textures, or hold food in their cheeks, their body is signaling that eating is hard work.

Feeding challenges typically come down to two primary buckets:
1️⃣ Sensory Processing
2️⃣ Oral-Motor Coordination

The good news? Feeding therapy can help build those essential muscles and sensory tolerance step-by-step.

If mealtime is stressful for your family, reach out to Tiny Tots Therapy today. We’re here to support your little one’s journey to happy, confident eating!

Sometimes the work we do as OTs goes beyond working with children and families...it's also with prospective and future OTs in the making! I spent the last 7 months mentoring an amazing human who has pure passion and love for helping others. Can't wait to see where her graduate school journey takes her 🩷 It is always an honor to teach others about why we do what we do!

"Just one bite and then you can have dessert."
"If you don't eat your dinner, no screen time."

We have all said it or heard it! As parents, when our child refuses to eat, our internal alarm bells go off. We worry about their growth, their health, and, let’s be honest, the dinner we spent an hour cooking that is now sitting untouched. 🫠

It makes complete sense that we reach for pressure or bargaining. But here’s the sensory reality of a selective/picky eater:

🧠 The Brain in Defense Mode: To a child with sensory processing differences or oral-motor challenges, an unfamiliar or sensory-offensive food doesn't just look "yucky"—their nervous system perceives it as an actual physical threat.

⚡ Pressure = Fight-or-Flight: When we bargain, threaten, or force "one polite bite," we spike their adrenaline. When adrenaline spikes, appetite vanishes, digestion slows down, and the dinner table becomes a battleground.

What to do instead? Shift to Division of Responsibility:

Your Job: Decide what food is served, when it's served, and where it's served. (Always include at least 1 "safe food" you know they love!).

Their Job: Decide if they eat and how much they eat.

When you take the pressure off, you lower the nervous system threat. Learning to eat starts with feeling safe at the table. 🤍

👇 Be honest: What is the one food your child acts like is toxic waste? (Mine is broccoli with "green bumps!")
