Belonging is not a bonus in healing. For exploited youth, it can be the difference between staying stuck in survival and finally feeling safe enough to begin again.

That’s why Magdalena’s Daughters centers sanctuary, therapeutic care, life skills, and community belonging. Healing grows when a young person is seen, protected, and surrounded by people who won’t give up on them.

We once sat with a young woman who kept apologizing for taking up space.

That moment has stayed with me, because trauma-informed care should never ask a girl to shrink to be safe.

It should protect her, steady her, and restore her dignity through real support, clear boundaries, and a place where healing can begin.

Help protect girls who need safety and care.

We spend a lot of time teaching children who to avoid.

Maybe we should spend just as much time teaching them who they can trust.

After years of working alongside foster youth, one belief has changed everything for me:

Connection isn’t the reward after safety.

Connection is what creates safety.

Rules matter.

Boundaries matter.

Awareness matters.

But when a child already feels seen, valued, and deeply connected to a trusted adult, they’re far less likely to look for that connection in someone who doesn’t have their best interests at heart.

That’s why I believe prevention starts long before a crisis.

It starts with relationships.

This is Episode 1 of our new series, Connection Is Protection. Follow along as we rethink what it really means to keep kids safe.

They just know they’re tired.

For some youth, a safe home can feel unfamiliar at first. When survival has been the norm, steadiness can almost feel too quiet.

That’s why our work is about more than shelter. It’s about creating a place that catches, stabilizes, and restores.

Share this with someone who needs to hear it.

Grooming often starts with attention that feels safe.

A compliment. A gift. Extra time. Then the secrecy starts, and that is where adults need to pay attention.

Real care does not ask someone to hide, rush, or keep quiet about what is happening.

If a relationship starts to feel special but also secretive, that is a red flag.

Grooming can look like care, trust, and safety at first. That is why it can be hard to spot early.

Traffickers use compliments, gifts, and attention to build emotional dependence before pressure and secrets begin.

Real love never asks for secrecy or pressure. When affection demands those, step back and get help.

At Magdalena's Daughters, our survivor-led programs offer sanctuary and support with:
- Safe, therapeutic residential care
- Life skills education for empowerment
- Healing through community and belonging

Help bring awareness and protection to at-risk youth today.

Yesterday was a beautiful reminder that prevention happens in community.

Our Wellness & Civic Engagement Workshop brought together incredible partners who poured into the lives of young people through creativity, healing, leadership, movement, and connection. From civic engagement and sewing to hip hop, balloon artistry, and a restorative sound bath, every experience created an opportunity for youth to discover new strengths, build confidence, and feel supported.

We are deeply grateful to the County of San Bernardino and each of our amazing facilitators for investing your time, talents, and hearts into our youth. Together, we’re creating spaces where young people can thrive, belong, and envision a brighter future.

This is what it looks like when a community chooses prevention. Thank you for being part of the mission. 💛

Culturally responsive care is more than kindness. It is protection for BIPOC foster youth who have faced exploitation.

These young women need more than shelter. They need:

• A safe place that respects and reflects their cultural identities
• Therapeutic care shaped for their unique experiences
• Community belonging that helps them feel seen and valued

When care honors culture, healing deepens and empowerment grows.

Join us in building sanctuaries where every foster youth feels safe and protected.

Too many BIPOC foster youth are asked to heal in systems that never made them feel safe.

Culturally responsive care changes that. It honors identity, builds trust, and gives healing room to begin.

For youth navigating trauma, belonging is not a bonus. It is part of care.
