“Too sensitive.” “You take everything personally.” Or my personal favorite: “Why do you let things bother you so much?”
If you’ve been hearing that your whole life, it makes sense that you learned to shrink it, to minimize it and treat your feelings like they’re the problem.
But here’s what’s actually going on: your nervous system isn’t broken— it’s fundamentally different. You’re not overreacting! You’re processing more than most people even register: The energy in the room, the tone behind someone’s words, the look that lasted a half second too long. You caught all of it, and you always have.
That’s not weakness, but it IS information — and it might be pointing to something nobody ever thought to look for.
If you’ve always felt like you experience the world more intensely than the people around you, I’d love to talk. Link in bio to learn more about what late-identified ADHD and autism can actually look like and what it means for you.
