I became a massage therapist because I kept getting frustrated as a mental health counselor.
I could see where people were holding it. The jaw. The shoulders locked up by their ears. The breath they'd been forgetting to take for three years.
And I wanted to reach through the conversation and just... hold them there. Tell them: you don't have to keep carrying that.
Talk therapy is powerful. But some things don't live in words. They live in the body. And the body doesn't respond to being analyzed. It responds to feeling safe.
Once a person feels safe — really safe — their body already knows exactly what to do.
I've watched it happen hundreds of times. I'm still not over it.
