On Gabapentin? You must listen to this!

✨But first, follow along Madison Brown, PA-C 🩺 for tips and tricks to keep yourself and your family healthy! ✨

A new large-scale study just dropped, and it’s raising serious concerns about long-term gabapentin use.

Patients who filled 6 or more prescriptions for gabapentin had a 29% higher risk of dementia—and for those aged 35–49, that risk more than doubled.

While this study doesn’t prove causation, the association is too strong to ignore—especially with so many patients on gabapentin for years without reassessment.

If you or your patients are using gabapentin for chronic pain, it might be time to revisit the plan. Cognitive health matters.

The real magic of walking for weight loss in perimenopause? It’s what happens to your blood sugar — not your step count.

When you walk for just 10-15 minutes after your biggest meal, you can reduce blood sugar spikes by up to 30%. And here’s why that matters in perimenopause:

Lower blood sugar = lower insulin = less belly fat storage.

Plus, walking is gentle on your already-stressed cortisol levels.

In my clinic, I tell patients all the time: You don’t need a 10,000 step goal. You don’t need to power walk. You literally just need to move after eating.

My routine? A casual 10-minute loop around the parking lot after lunch as many days as I can fit it in or a treck around the property after dinner. . Sometimes it’s with the kids. Sometimes it’s my only quiet moment of the day. But it’s non-negotiable.

The research shows even 2-5 minutes helps, but 10-15 gives you the best glucose control.

The goal isn’t just burning calories. It’s working WITH your changing hormones, not against them.

Save this for after dinner tonight 📌

I’m dying to know — are you team morning walk, lunch walk, or evening stroll? 👇

I also just got a new pair of sneaks- Nike Pegasus and they are 🤌🏼

One of the most common supplement questions I get in clinic is about…berberine.

Over the past few years, I’ve had more and more patients ask:
💬 “Does it actually work?”
💬 “Is it safe?”
💬 “Should I be taking it?”

The reason this conversation has become so common is because more people are learning about prediabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic health—and looking for ways to support those goals alongside healthy lifestyle habits.

For me, this topic is personal.

I actually started researching berberine back in 2019 after I found out I was prediabetic during my fertility workup. That experience completely changed the way I looked at metabolic health and sent me down a rabbit hole of learning—not just for my patients, but for myself.

One thing I always tell my patients is that quality matters. When I decided to incorporate berberine into my own routine, I wanted a product from a company I trusted. That’s why I’ve been using HUM Nutrition’s Best of Berberine, which provides 1,200 mg of berberine per daily serving and includes BioPerine® to support absorption.

Just as importantly, I remind people that no supplement replaces the basics:
✔️ Prioritizing protein
✔️ Strength training
✔️ Quality sleep
✔️ Stress management
✔️ Balanced nutrition

Supplements are exactly that—a supplement to a healthy lifestyle, not a substitute for one.

As always, talk with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have diabetes or take medications that affect blood sugar.

Have you tried berberine before? Let me know your experience below! 👇

“Your labs are normal” might be the most gaslighting phrase in women’s healthcare.

First- tell me which slide hit home for you!? 👇

Was it the 3am wake-ups? The weight gain? The “you’re just stressed” dismissal?

Here’s what I’ve learned after 15 years in Family Medicine and my own journey into my mid 30s:

“Normal” doesn’t mean optimal.

The lab ranges were designed to catch disease, not to help you thrive. They weren’t created with YOUR hormones, YOUR age, or YOUR symptoms in mind.

I see it every day in clinic:
• TSH at 3.5 (“normal” but you’re exhausted)
• Ferritin at 18 (“normal” but you can’t think straight)
• Fasting insulin at 14 (“normal” but you can’t lose weight)
• Progesterone dropping but still “in range”

The truth? Perimenopause can start in your late 30s. The average age is actually 37-42, not your late 40s like most people think.

And those symptoms you’re feeling? They’re REAL. Even when your doctor can’t find anything “wrong.”

You’re not anxious for no reason.
You’re not tired because you’re lazy.
You’re not gaining weight because you lack willpower.

Your hormones are shifting, and your body is telling you — even when the labs don’t.

This isn’t about anti-aging or refusing to accept natural transitions. It’s about understanding what’s happening so you can support your body through it.

Because here’s what I know for sure: You deserve to feel good in your body at every age.

Let’s normalize talking about this. Because you’re definitely not alone.

💛 Save this for your next doctor’s appointment and share it with a friend who needs to hear this today.

And here is one more 👇

I tried to address most of your concerns when it comes to GLP ones so that you can understand the actual science behind each one.

And here’s one I left out!

Several of you said that you had concerns about there not being any long-term data associated with the medication’s. However, this particular class of medications have been around since 2005. That means we have 21 years worth of data. And that data points to nothing but great news when it comes to morbidity and immortality associated with many chronic disease diseases!
Great news.

Now, are these medication’s for everyone?
Absolutely not.

Do they have side effects?
Yes, anything you put in your mouth (including that Alani) has the potential to give you side effects.

But when done correctly, in the right patient, there can be so many benefits!

What are your thoughts? Do you have other concerns outside of these? What has your experience with a GLP one been?
