Getting down to crunch time.

Residents and early-career physicians should register now for our Life After Residency program on September 9. It's July, which means —yes, July 4 shifts —but also new laws in Virginia. As of July 1, it's a little easier to be an ER doctor in the Commonwealth. And VACEP advocacy played a big role in bringing these changes to your daily practice.

We've pulled together a short podcast with our government affairs lead Aimee Perron Seibert and VACEP president Joran Sequeira, MD. Among the changes:

- A ban on healthcare non-competes
- Delayed release of test results to patients (an update to the CURES Act)
- Fi****ms restrictions in hospitals providing mental health services

A recent issue in Virginia with Valley Health of Wi******er has found its way to Dr. Glaucomflecken, who weighs in on the health system's decision to conclude contracts with Emergency Medicine of Blue Ridge (EMBR). A new partner, SCP Health, will assume emergency coverage of the health system’s six emergency departments as of September 30.

There is important legislation moving through the Virginia General Assembly that could affect our professional liability environment.

Lawmakers are considering a bill (Senate Bill 536) that would raise Virginia’s medical malpractice cap from the current $2.7 million to $6 million. This change came late in the session and has the support of legislative leadership.

If enacted, the increase would apply to rare catastrophic cases. While most claims do not approach the cap, this could put upward pressure on malpractice premiums over time — particularly in higher-risk specialties like emergency medicine. VACEP is monitoring the bill and in discussions with the Medical Society of Virginia, hospital partners, and legislators to assess potential impacts for emergency physicians.

In a late session move, the General Assembly is pushing legislation that would increase Virginia’s medical malpractice cap.

Today we want to honor Dr. James Dudley, a Northern Neck emergency physician who passed away on January 30. We spoke to a few docs who knew or worked with Dr. Dudley, who served as our president from 2004-2006. What emerged is a picture of a steady voice for emergency medicine in Virginia — kind, thoughtful, and always happy to help.

Dr. Dudley worked as an emergency physician at Riverside Tappahannock for nearly 40 years and was deeply involved in its medical group leadership. At the same time, he was the operational medical director of EMS agencies on the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. He provided medical care at free clinics and at local jails and prisons. For a time, he was the only medical examiner for local funeral homes in this region. He served as a policy advisor for Virginia-level medical legislation and sat on supervisory boards for medical associations including the Medical Society of Virginia. He was a mentor to young people, a guide to his team, and a "center of gravity" in the eastern Virginia medical community.

For his contributions, Dr. Dudley received VACEP's Career Achievement Award in 2010.

And most importantly: He was deeply proud of his family (four children), devoted to his wife of 41 years Carolyn, loved the Northern Neck, and brought warmth and humility to every role he held.

And his obituary is well worth your time. Our condolences to his family and friends.

James Roane Dudley, an emergency medicine physician serving communities across the Middle and Upper Peninsulas of Virginia, died on Friday, January 30, 2026, peacefully at home.
