With so much love and empathy…. A lesson I have learned through experience, many times.
Yes, this includes aggression, rudeness, back talking, yelling, whining, crying, begging, being ungrateful, making messes and just about anything else you can think of (I know you’ll come up with more… the answer is likely “yes, that too.”)
This doesn’t mean we don’t intervene when our child is hurting someone else or themselves. But we intervene in a very different way. The priority is to prevent any further hurt and support the emotional needs of everyone involved. Even with the absolute “worst” behaviour we try to connect, instead of correct.
Well I could have used some of my own advice this week. I took my 3 kids on a camping trip as a solo parent. There was lots of fun and memories but there were also tense moments. When I reflect back now, I was relying more on correction more than connection. We think when we go do something fun the kids will be so happy about having fun that they will be “obedient.” My kids were happy but I forgot that when you are in a new environment there is an adjustment period where everyone has to figure out what the boundaries of this new setting are. They were great with nature. It was the tent they struggled to realize was not a wrestling ring but in fact just some thin mesh and bendy poles. A strong gust could knock it over. They kept running circles around it and wrestling inside it. I just kept asking them to “stop”, “gentle with the tent”, “I don’t want you to trip on that string.” But instead, I should have connected. I could have offered to do something with them instead of just telling them to stop doing what they were doing. I brought lots of crafts for my daughter but had less for my boys because their interests are not as easy to bring. But you know what else? I was trying to process and reflect while I was camping and I couldn’t. I had to get home to process. I kept thinking of my quote “give yourself grace.” That helped because taking on a tent camping trip as a solo parent with 3 ND kids and a still healing broken ankle/foot was probably a lot. Getting home alive and without major injury is what I would call a success lol.
