Yesterday we talked about what you can actually do with your 1 month old. Today I’m showing you how!

These are little moments of purposeful play I introduced with my daughter during her wake windows:

1. High contrast picture cards to give her something interesting to focus on. Hold them about 8 to 12 inches from baby’s face.

2. Slowly moving a toy or my face to offer opportunities to begin following with her eyes. Tracking is still emerging at this age, so brief looks count!

3. Supported tummy time on the floor to practice lifting her head. A small rolled towel under the chest, with arms forward, can offer support as you introduce floor time alongside chest or lap tummy time.

4. Side lying play on both sides to explore a different position and bring her hands together.

5. A little sensory exploration during tummy time on a water mat. This is optional! Use an intact, age appropriate mat according to its instructions, keep baby’s face clear and stay right beside them.

All of these activities are for awake, closely supervised play. Keep them brief and follow your baby’s cues. You don’t need to fit every activity into every wake window!

Save this for your next little moment of play, and follow along for month by month milestone check ins and purposeful play ideas.

What should you actually be doing with your 1 month old during their wake windows?

They’re so little, but there are already simple, intentional ways to play together!

• Start introducing tummy time on the floor alongside tummy time on your chest or lap. A small rolled towel under their chest, with their arms forward, can provide a little extra support.

• Give them time to move and explore on their back and during supervised side lying play on both sides.

• Introduce black and white picture cards, held about 8 to 12 inches from their face.

• Slowly move your face or a rattle a short distance to encourage them to begin following with their eyes. This skill is just emerging, so it won’t look smooth or consistent yet!

Keep these moments short, follow your baby’s cues and offer breaks. Tummy time and side lying are for awake, closely supervised play.

Tomorrow I’ll show you exactly how to do these activities in a step by step video, using examples of what I did with my daughter at 1 month old!

Your baby can sit independently. Now let’s help them move in and out of sitting!

Side sitting is one of the most functional sitting positions for a baby on the move, and it’s a position I often encourage with my daughter.

With both knees bent and their legs to one side, baby can practice shifting their weight, rotating their trunk, and using their core during play. It also helps them transition from sitting onto hands and knees for crawling, building a foundation for later transitions toward standing.

Once your baby is sitting independently, often around 6 to 8 months, introduce side sitting during supervised floor play. Offer toys to either side and encourage practice in both directions.

Save this for your next floor play session!

Want to help your 6 month old build the strength and stability they need to sit independently? Try raising their support surface!

Place a Boppy around their hips while they sit on the floor, then position a sturdy toy, like the Fisher Price kick piano, in front of them so they can rest their hands on it.

Think of it as bringing the floor up to them! That higher surface gives them somewhere to push through their arms while they practice keeping their trunk upright.

As their balance improves, gradually lower the surface so they do more of the work themselves.

Stay right beside them and help at their hips as needed!

To the mom who is still in the thick of postpartum depression, I see you. I was you.

The mom trying to be present while feeling so far from herself. The mom wondering how she could love her baby so much and still feel so overwhelmed. The mom questioning whether she was doing enough.

Seeing another mom share this trend touched me because I remember that season. Watching these clips now, I wish I could hug the version of me who was still working through it and tell her that joy would feel lighter one day.

I’m open about my postpartum depression because there is nothing about that part of my story I need to hide. If sharing it helps even one mom feel less alone, it deserves to be spoken about.

This page will always be about helping your little one grow, but I also want it to be a place where YOU feel seen, heard, and supported. Behind every baby learning something new is a mom who is learning, too. And sometimes she needs someone to ask how she’s doing.

If you’re second guessing yourself tonight, your hardest days do not define the mother you are. Your baby loves you. Your arms, your voice, your presence mean so much to them. You don’t have to be perfect to be their whole world.

And you deserve care, too. You deserve someone who listens when you say you’re struggling. You deserve support without shame and space to be honest without having to pretend you’re okay.

If you’re still finding your way through, keep going. Reach for support. Let someone help carry what feels too heavy. You don’t have to do this alone.

To the moms who have been there, if you feel comfortable, share what helped you below. Your words might be the encouragement another mom needs tonight.

No mom should have to wonder if she’s the only one.
