Last night at Smithville Lake might have given us the most beautiful sunset of the entire season.
The evening started out pretty gloomy. Dark clouds were scattered across the sky, completely hiding the sun, but there was no rain, almost no wind, and the water was beautifully still. The only sounds were the water gently lapping against the dock and the familiar clinking of the sailboats nearby.
And then sunset happened.
The clouds began to part just as the sun slipped underneath them toward the horizon. Suddenly, all that gray disappeared and the entire sky lit up in layers of peach, golden yellow, orange, and pink. It was one of those Kansas City sunsets that makes you stop whatever youâre doing and just stare.
The current quietly carried us farther through Sailboat Cove than we realized, while a great blue heron walked the shoreline alongside our class like our own personal spectator.
Our Namaste Challenge begins today, so naturally everyone was already practicing. Students were showing off their favorite balance poses, trying new yoga poses, cheering each other on, and soaking up one of those absolutely perfect nights on the water.
We also had a VERY important maiden voyage! One of our membership students arrived with a brand-new GLIDE paddleboard, and Smithville Lake officially became its first adventure. There really isnât a better place to break in a new board.
We should have been paddling back soonerâŚbut that sunset wasnât going to let us leave.
By the time we finally started making our way toward the dock, paper lanterns had been released into the evening sky. Between the glowing horizon, the lanterns floating overhead, the sailboats, the heron, and our little SUP Yoga community paddling home together, the entire evening felt almost unreal.
These are the nights I wish I could bottle up and save for winter.
