Survival from cardiac arrest is decided long before the hospital gets involved.

The three to five minutes before EMS arrives matter more to a person's outcome than almost anything that happens after. That window belongs to whoever is standing there, not to a paramedic who hasn't arrived yet.

That reframes what CPR training actually is. It isn't a certificate for a job requirement. It's a transfer of responsibility, from the systems we assume will save us, to the ordinary people already in the room.

Every parent, coach, teacher, and teammate who gets trained is closing that gap a little more.

A home health agency called us because their new hires kept letting CPR certification slide until the last minute, and it was creating scheduling gaps across their caregiver roster.

Cardiac arrest doesn't wait for EMS to arrive. Here's what to do in the first 60 seconds.

Check responsiveness. Tap the person and shout. If there's no response, move immediately to step two.

Call 911 or have someone else call while you stay with the person. If you're alone, put your phone on speaker.

Check for normal breathing. Gasping is not normal breathing. If they aren't breathing normally, begin compressions.

Push hard and fast in the center of the chest, about 2 inches deep, at a pace of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

If an AED is available, turn it on and follow the voice prompts. It will guide you through every step.

Keep going until EMS takes over or the person starts breathing on their own.

This sequence works the same whether you're a nurse, a coach, a teenager, or a grandparent. The only variable is whether you've practiced it.
